This is gonna sound like crazy talk, I know, but you have control over how you view Christmas.

It's really hard to totally wipe out deeply entrenched received cultural ideas.

Wasn't for me, so I'm gonna call that a personal problem.

Do you think that you're completely emancipated from all cultural ideas? Or just this specific one/

Dude, all I know is that I feel no compunction to cook fancy shit or put up a Christmas tree or buy gifts for anyone but close family, so I don't do any of that stuff. I'm not gonna act like some victim of cultural norms when I'm an individual with agency. Are there people out there who think less of me for not playing along with the picture-perfect bullshit? Probably, but I don't care. You have this power in you as well, if you want to claim it. Or you can keep feeling inferior and resentful and brainwashed. Your choice!

Even if you don't actually feel compelled to do it, it can still make you irrationally, emotionally goofy and down and disspirited.

I think that's all we're talking about here.

Can it? Does it? I have literally never experienced that. I actually always quite liked Scrooge's take on things-- "You keep Christmas in your own way, and let me keep it in mine."

Don't let people bum you out over not having a traditional Christmas, simple as that. It's a silly thing to get dispirited about.

Personally, I quite like Christmas, fancy tree and fancy presents and all. But I find your whole attitude here obtuse and insensitive. You're basically saying "If you don't bootstrap your way out of the cultural conditioning you've been inundated with, you're weak and you have only yourself to blame for feeling low," which is BS in my opinion.

I do agree that we all have to take some responsibility for our feelings, but it's really not half as simple as you're making it out to be - not for many people, anyway.

That's moving the goalposts. I can agree it's difficult to see past deeply entrenched received cultural ideas but it's hardly impossible. Lots of people do it on a selective basis, and since you specifically addressed the issue of Christmas, it's a little disingenuous to behave as though not being brainwashed by this vision of Christmas as it should be is the same as being emancipated from every and all cultural/social expectations.

But I'll tell you this - the key to not being unhappy because you fall short of that picture perfect holiday is realizing that this is YOUR mindset that YOU can change, any time you want. But if you persist in the belief that this is something you have no control over, well...
