I know nothing about her. What does she do to give female gamers a bad name?

(Anonymous) 2018-01-01 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
NAYRT but for me it's the stereotypically bubbly and overly cheerful tone that at least her Internet writing takes. Easily excitable!! For everything!! So adorkable!! I hate that in the geek culture generally, but Day just gives it this extra kick of saccharine that makes my teeth curl. There's something infantilizing and juvenile about it all.

It's also really kind of insulting that The Queen of the Geek Women happens to be...thin and pretty and white. And she seems kind of completely and blithely unaware that lots of 1) her female fans and 2) the population she kind of sort of de facto ~represents~ are neither of those things.

I wish Anita Sarkeesian had become Queen of the Geek Women instead, or at least Queen of the Gamers. She obviously loves playing games enough to pick them apart (which so many her detractors don't seem to get but oh well). Still thin and white (?) and pretty, but also clearly wicked smart and spends a lot of time thinking about things. For one, she's at least pretty obviously aware that many women gamers (and her fans) are not all thin/pretty/white.

... oh wow. You want Miss "I never played even a fraction of the games I whine about and stole other people's footage because I can't even be arsed to create my own content for the thousands of dollars people threw my way and also I'm a professional victim and con artist who gives both female gamers and feminists a bad name" to be "Queen of the Geek Women"? That's... either really deluded or some great trolling.

Both your comment and AYRT's comment are so OTT I'm wondering if you're the same person trying to start wank.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-01 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
How is what I said OTT when it's been proven without a doubt that it's the truth?

(Anonymous) 2018-01-02 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Can I ask, OP, do you believe that her being threatened with DEATH and DOXXED, justified in any way? Have you seen the hate spread her way?
Or are you a gamergate type?
I think you should be the one doing the research, OP and stop drinking the proverbial coolaid.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-02 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
No I don't think she "deserves" death threats etc. I never said she does. Maybe you should try to read what's actually being said instead of trying make up things as it suits you.

So does she deserve it? Absolutely not, because that type of behaviour is vile no matter who it's directed at.
But I also don't think anyone with her type of personality and presence on the internet should be particularly surprised at the vitriol spewn her way. Is it great that these things happened to her? No. Was it to be expected? Sadly, yes. Does it excuse the bullshit she pulled and give her some sort of "get out of everything without honest criticism" card? No it doesn't.

Good answer.

I don't get the AYRT's logic "Here are her flaws" "Let me point out that she has been victimised"

Like... yeah, that's terrible, I think we all agree it's terrible, but it's sort of unrelated to her flaws... unless the relationship that's being suggested is that her flaws should be ignored because of her victim status? In which case I want to know how long Anita has been anoning here on F!S.

Chemtrails are the real reason for conspiracy theories: they do things to impressionable peoples' brains. There's proof out there too, just go search.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-02 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Well you apparently know all about that.

I AM a gamergate type, and I don't think her being threatened or doxxed is justified. It's not justified for anyone. Why whould you assume anyone thinks that?

Seriously "I find her disingenuous and fake" "Do think think she deserves death threats?" Like... there's no logical link between those two things. There's no reason to bring it up. We're talking about her flaws, not her victim status.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-02 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
You do know that many of those "threats" have been either disproven or traced to her own camp, right? I can't think of any that were actual threats, really.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-02 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
man you sound like you come from a pro-gamer gate echo chamber, dude.

Some of them were, sure. But no, this is the internet we're talking about, you get death and rape threats for breakfast. A controversial figure like Anita? You gotta know she wouldn't need to fake them.

Now did she capitalise on them? She sure did. As is her right, I suppose.

Do those threats negate any of the legitimate criticisms of her? I promise you they do not. She's awful, just awful. But she did absolutely catch death and rape threats, that's just a fact.

You might be able to argue that they were not actionable threats. The internet is full of "tough guys", but I don't think that negates the unacceptability of the death threats.

Citation needed for Felicia Day being unaware that female gamers who aren't thin/pretty/white exist.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-02 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that really seems like something the ayrt has decided about Felicia Day because they don't like her and they imagine that's how she is.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-02 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
It's funny, because The Guild - as far as I'm aware, Felicia's first entrance into geek media - included an Asian woman and an overweight woman as her female co-stars. (and the latter is never once made fun of in the series for her weight, it's never even commented on or made an issue). Her blog videos and gaming videos regularly show her hanging out/gaming with women of all races and body types (including all her Guild cast members, whom she is good friends with). This accusation really comes out of left field without any basis in reality.

Indeed. I think we mist have all gone to the drive in movies tonight, because I feel there's a rather large projection behind this.

See, as a male and a legitimate gamer by just about any stripe, I find Felicia Days public persona to be very much inline with how I express my geekdom. Easily excitable!! For everything!! Is how I roll. Sure, she doesn't look like me, but I find that isn't a barrier to relating to her. Or, atleast how she presents herself. I acknowledge that it may be an act, but it's not an unfitting one.

infantilizing and juvenile? Yeah, you're probably right, I am a juvenile infant when it comes to shit I love. Not even ashamed.

I find her to be FAR more representative of my geekery than anything Sarkeesian has ever put out. In fact I find Sarkeesian... Cutting most of that paragraph, cause I don't feel like getting into a scrap tonigh... to be antithisis of how I envision my geekery.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-02 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
So you do think that there's such a thing as a REAL GAMER?

(Anonymous) 2018-01-02 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
Yup. That would be a person than play games.
thewakokid: (Default)

[personal profile] thewakokid 2018-01-02 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
Of course there is.

Somone who plays games is a real gamer. I mean... You'd have a hard time claiming the identity of a film buff if you don't watch movies, and you'd have a hard time claiming to be a gamer if you don't game.

Like, I sense that was supposed to be a loaded question, but I think it might have been loaded with blanks.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-02 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
Sarkeesian is a con artist, is on record as saying that she doesn't like video games, spits in the face of feminism, and clearly doesn't play the games she talks about since she gets basic facts wrong.

She's one of the biggest reasons that feminism has such a bad name nowadays.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-02 06:54 am (UTC)(link)
What record?
