Eeee this thread makes me not want to ever go to a gynocologist, even though I've gotten letters from the doctor's office saying I should see one (for a pap smear, not a health problem).

My regular physician told me if I didn't see a gynecologist regularly, just to let them know before I went for my checkup and they'd do a pap smear in their office because it's important. So see if they can do it (I'm in the US)

I've never gone to a gynecologist. I always get pap smears and pelvic exams from my regular doctor. (I assume ayrt's issue is the exam, not the doctor's title.)

Yeah, it's getting a pap smear that I'm nervous about, not what the doctor's title is.

It is a little unnerving, but don't feel you can't speak up. My advice? If you're a virgin or small down there, make sure to ask them to use a small speculum (they do make them nowadays), and always make sure they use lube. Helps a lot with the discomfort (the only one who didn't was actually a female gyno).

The nurse practitioner at my doctor's office who's known me since I was four years old does my regular pap smears, and she's both good and reassuring.

I'm willing to put up with a little discomfort every three/five years vs not catching cervical cancer until it's too late.
