I don't agree, but to each their own. She seemed about as regal as I could have wanted, I thought.

This Leia wasn't supposed to be regal. She was supposed to be a brilliant leader but exhausted by war. She's a warrior, not a princess. She's been in the fight too long to still act like a princess.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-06 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
This. She's very obviously jaded and exhausted by this point in time and has thrown the regality to the wind.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-06 03:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly. There's a reason they call her General, not Princess.

She's dead so you have nothing to worry about in IX!

(Anonymous) 2018-01-06 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
I honestly agree, OP. I really, really, really am trying to convince myself I've liked Leia in the new trilogy, but it falls flat and all I see is Carrie. It might be the script, it might be the fact that her personality became practically more iconic than the role, idk. But the acting feels weak and she doesn't feel regal.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-06 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
It's the actor's prominence overtaking the character. It's not a failing of the script or the actor. It's a failure of humans.

You ever wonder why well-known actors need to go to great lengths to establish their characters in later films? It's because they and everyone else knows that the audience has been primed to see them as Actor rather than as Character. It's the irony and paradox of fame. You're a box office draw, but your power and potential as an actor is also hamstrung by your visibility and recognizability.

You aren't able to separate ST Leia from Carrie because you got too caught up in Carrie. It's the case for a lot of people and it's not anyone's fault.

I think maybe the reason you think she was playing Carrie Fisher is because all you see now is Carrie Fisher.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-06 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
I definitely didn't see Carrie in Leia. Leia seemed way more refined - and, yes, regal - than Carrie. I have a lot of issues with the new movies but I thought Leia was great.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-06 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
I actually didn't see much of Carrie in sequel-Leia, but I DID see a Leia who had aged differently than fans probably wanted her to age. Same with Luke.

Yup. It made sense. With the actors the way they were, they simply couldn't go the way the EU did. It wasn't possible. But it was still believable development, at least for me.

Weird. In Leia I saw a strong, gracious and commanding but tired fighter.
In Luke I saw a jaded cynic.
In Han...I saw Harrison Ford, who is so over this whole acting thing.

Or playing a role he never cared for in a movie series he dislikes.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-06 07:27 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't enjoy Harrison Ford much in TFA either. His acting wasn't bad per se, but he constantly felt like Ford-playing-Han to me, and never quite felt like just Han.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-06 08:19 am (UTC)(link)
Ahh.... I'm actually not so keen on Harrison Ford and I definitely see the actor over the character in many of his later roles, but he just about gelled as Old Han for me in the new films, the character had enough presence (and a few exclusive tics) that he took over. Close thing, but I'm glad of it.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-06 01:21 pm (UTC)(link)
lol, you didn't lie

(Anonymous) 2018-01-06 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup. I cringed every time he was on screen. I was never able to see Han in him and it was such a weird feeling.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-06 07:47 am (UTC)(link)
I feel like many people only want to see "Princess Leia" and not "General Organa." She technically stopped being a princess when Alderaan got blown up in the FIRST MOVIE.

Also one of the anons above me is right, the characters aged in ways different than people wanted, but they're certainly still believable as their characters IMO. A lot of people complain about Luke in TLJ too, but I ABSOLUTELY believed that this was a direction his character would take.

TL;DR: People wanted happily ever after but got more interesting stuff (IMO) that they don't like because they didn't expect it.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-06 08:14 am (UTC)(link)
I feel like one of the very few who loved Luke in TLJ. I thought he had a lot more personality in this one movie than the generic action hero of the original trilogy. Maybe I'm just weak for the "jaded cynical retired hero" trope.

The only complaint is I wish there was more built up Rey/Luke mentor type relationship. They could have done so much more in that regard.

Regal? She's not a princess anymore she's a general that has been leading the rebellion most of her entire life. Her brother gone missing. Her husband's a flake. Her son is a villain. That is enough to wear anyone down.

As to her voice, what do you expect? She WAS struggling with drug problems and sorry that it doesn't just magically disappear at will. People age and change. Of course she is a different person now than she has been. I thought she held herself very well.

I just tell myself Leia has had a very rough life.

That's how I feel.....about Mark in TLJ.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-07 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
I know it's unpopular, but I found the rougher voice sexy. I'll just pretend it was for happier reasons.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-07 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
The only thing I really didn't like about Leia in TLJ was when she slapped Poe. I mean... wtf? That felt really out of place in that situation.
