...But they didn't know each other for a significant portion of their lives. From experience, it's actually not likely they'd have a close sibling bond or even really be anything more than awkward.

They might not have known that they were siblings for the vast majority of it, but they did spend four-five years together after both of their lives were irrevocably and traumatically changed, under conditions that would have promoted close and quickly-formed bonds.

Agreed. Also, they met in the aftermath of both of them suffering great losses - Leia lost Alderaan, and Luke lost his aunt and uncle. It kind of makes sense that even if they didn't spend so many years together, I think they would very much want to be each others' family.

Bonds that may not last because they were born from trauma both may have not been ready to deal with and would complicate bonds. Let's be real: the biggest things they have in common are those experiences and some blood ties. Do they have similar hobbies? Likes, dislikes? Etc?

Luke should've formed the same bonds with Han Solo, then.

Agreed. I'm not hugely familiar with the SW EU, but I did think that Han/Luke/Leia definitely had a family-like bond by the end of ROTJ.

I'm not saying he didn't. Just that Luke and Leia aren't starting from scratch when it comes to building a sibling/familial relationship - they're already close friends if not familial already.

I get what you're trying to say, but nah. You don't go through what Luke and Leia went through and discover you have a secret sibling when you've both lost your families and then part ways without even trying to develop a relationship when things settle down.

I mean, people do? It's entirely human? They may have been good friends, but all they had in common at that point was the trauma from those events and blood. Do they have the same hobbies? Do they have anything in common besides "we served the resistance?"

Like, I'm gonna point out. When people point out your same logic for why a lot of the endgame HP couples make sense (they went through similar or the same trauma in that war), they get shouted down. But here it's okay.

Nah, I'm kind of glad they don't get to be Buddy Buddy Siblings just because they share blood.

Look, I'm not saying it's impossible your scenario would happen, but it seems highly unlikely. They basically go through a war together and find out that they're the only living family they have left and you think they're going to shrug and go their separate ways because they... don't have any hobbies in common? LOL! Like, let me try to imagine it your way...

Leia shakes her head sadly. "I know my entire planet and all the family I knew has been destroyed. All I have left is Luke, the twin brother I never knew I had. I'd LIKE to get to know him, but..." She pauses, and her breath catches in her throat. "He just doesn't appreciate stamp collecting and early punk the way I do."

LOL!

Speaking as a person who has siblings I've never met, it really, really doesn't work like this. Yes, Luke should've bonded with Leia because of their experiences... just like he should've bonded with Han. Him and Leia being related doesn't change anything. Being related to someone is not an emotional connection creating magic.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-13 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
No, but it's certainly an incentive to try, especially given the loss of their previous families, and Luke's high regard for blood kin.

They had a connection through the force before they even knew they were related. Luke calls out to Leia and she knows where to find him dangling from the bottom of Cloud City. Chewie and Lando didn't feel that.
