Is this weird?

(Anonymous) 2018-01-13 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
I decided a long time ago I didn't want children and I haven't changed my mind about that. But I kinda wouldn't mind babysitting from time to time and wish someone would ask me? The problem is, I have absolutely no references or credentials and nobody I know has a young kid who needs babysitting. I have a relatively tidy home, I can cook/bake, I have a driver's license and a clean driving record, I don't smoke/drink.

This sounds dumb like I just want to borrow someone's kid and pretend to be a parent for a while, and... I guess I sort of do.

Nah, I feel the same. Like I'd be happy to help some overstressed and tired parents and watch kids for a bit...but don't plan on having any of my own. And I don't know anyone who needs that help personally

Doesn't sound weird to me. I don't want kids, but I have friends with yound children and don't mind babysitting. Kids are cute and fun and it's nice to see the world through their eyes sometimes.

It's not weird at all!

I don't want my own, but I do enjoy being a cool auntie type person, and I have volunteered for a few different organisations for kids in a mentor/helper role. It's not the same commitment as something like becoming a foster parent, but it does feel good to be able to share some of my time and resources with young people who really benefit from having positive attention.

As a side note, I didn't need any credentials or anything to volunteer. I had a record check to make sure I'm not a creep, they went over what I needed to do and made sure I knew who to talk to if I had any questions. It was really easy.

Sorry for the late reply, but have you thought of volunteering in your area? Perhaps with the local Boys and Girls Club or with boy scouts/girl scouts? See if there's a way to volunteer that way. Maybe coach a team and this way you'll get to be around kids and be able to build relationships with parents as well.

Good luck! I totally know the feeling, but I'm lucky that my one friend asks me to babysit all the time.
