No, you're completely right. There's no need to read/watch/play anything as long as you can read enough wiki articles or watch enough youtube clips.

You're missing the point, here.

You read a really good fanfic. Then you find out the author hasn't watched the movie they're writing about. Does that make the fanfic suddenly bad?

If it were the opposite, like -- you read a really bad fanfic. Then you find out the author hasn't watched the movie they're writing about. The fanfic is still bad. You yell at the author WTF are you doing? Go watch the canon! -- I would fully support you on this.

If the person has a good reason for not reading/watching/playing? How about then? Cause I suck huge hairy monkey balls at Devil May Cry, and I refuse to cut my eyeballs out with the polygons that FFVII consists of. But I can out canon fact war anyone who takes me on about both of them, with exactly the same research you've just mentioned. So is there really an issue?

HAHAHA aww, I loved FFVII's polygons, they were so... terrible that it actually had a feel of old-school.

But if you're not like writing epic badfic or something (e.g. people who base FFVII stuff on just Advent Children and just get it all wroooooong), I seriously don't see why it's a problem, either.

-- do you ever tell people that you've never played either game/haven't finished or whatever, and do they get all angry at you too? (And can they ever tell if you don't tell them?)

I've told hardcore gaming fans about FFVII about it before, but then managed to totally hold my own in discussions about it with them.

In fandom, I've not written for FFVII but I have used it for the occasional crossover. I've had my characterisation praised. I make the fact that I refuse to play the game (and why) no secret, but I don't announce it unless asked/it comes up.

And yeah, I've had people bitch at me for not playing it for what they consider to be a shallow reason. But really, an RPG that old, no matter how awesome or classic, you're not playing for the awesome fight system, are you? And RPGs are, at their core, story + fight system + graphics. Get rid of two of those and I might as well be spending my time on wikipedia etc learning the story, because that's the only thing left in the game worth any time at all.

That said, TWEWY really is awesome in terms of graphics and fight system, and you should really play it if you get the chance.

I bought a DS specifically for TWEWY (and FFXII Revenant Wings) but I was kinda maybe totally drunk at the time, so I'm just lucky it worked out in the end, really.

I'd rather have someone who plays a character well and HASN'T read/seen/played the canon, than someone who HAS read/seen/played the canon and plays their characters BADLY.

Is it really asking a lot for you to get the point? So they haven't played/read/watched the series. They know the character, they get their voice. If they're not butchering the characterization, then what the hell is your problem?

I've seen players who do it worse even after doing all of that. Sorry, but your argument's really not holding any water here. I'd see it as a problem if they were ooc, not if they're, gasp! Doing it right!

It bugs ME. There, is that enough to get you to back off? There's no deep, fleshed out meaning behind it. I find it irritating, that is all.

No, it's not.

But it IS asking a lot to have people drop a character or have other people kick a player out that isn't doing anything wrong just because they haven't seen the canon.

I never said anything about making a person drop because of it. But isn't being a part of the particular fandom usually one of the qualifiers for playing a character from it?

But as I just stated above, it's something that bugs me personally. The end.

Oh, man, you'd hate me, then. I'm in about 4 or 5 fandoms I haven't seen the canon from where no one can even tell. Won't tell you which in case you're in them too. Sorry it bugs you but it's not like people are gonna leave just because of that.
