Ugh—weight talk tw

I want to try and hit an average of at least 10,000 steps a day this year, so I’m gonna go walk for a couple miles before bed, but I really wanna just grow a taproot out of my ass. My legs hurt after standing at work all day. I went to the doctor earlier this week for a non weight related reason, but I’m about 5 pounds away from clinical obesity, and my weight has been creeping up for years.

But walking is just about the only exercise I don’t hate except for swimming and horseback riding, and I’m too poor and too far from any place that offers riding, and it’s too cold to swim without a wetsuit. Oh well, at least I’ll sleep well when I get back.

Okay, made it just over 4.5 miles today, gonna fall over now, because tomorrow I’m going hiking with my aunt. She doesn’t have weight problems like me, but she doesn’t get much exercise at all, so it’s a beginner trail. I’m hoping we can work up to the local mountains, which are beautiful in spring.

Good on you! I always sleep really well when I've had a workout so I hope you have a restful sleep.

First, standing is actually harder on your body than walking is: http://www.todayifoundout.com/index.php/2015/09/standing-one-place-can-sometimes-make-legs-sore-walking/

Second, as a piece of general advice, try to find some non-weight-loss reasons to walk (or any other form of exercise.) Do you have more energy the next day when you walk? Is it easier to get to sleep when you do it?

One of the reasons people give up on exercise is that they don't see the weight loss that they hoped for. But exercise has a lot of benefits, even if the number on the scale doesn't budge. (Says the person who managed to gain weight training for a triathlon.)

AYRT—walking is my primary means of transportation if I’m going anywhere less than 2 miles away, since I take public transit and I can walk a mile in the time it takes for a bus to show up. And I’m not worried about gaining weight if it’s muscle.

I got promoted to a more sedentary job last year that requires me to stand all day instead of walking, lifting, bending, and stretching all day, and I got my degree this past spring so I’m not scurrying from class to class anymore either. I’m just sore from ramping up my walking and probably because I did 7 miles on Friday. Only 4 yesterday and I ended up at 4.5 today—after whining here, I went for a walk, but the 7 mile day was more than I’ve done in awhile and my body’s still pissed at me..

I’m not gonna quit if I don’t lose weight; I’ve quit before when my allergies kicked my ass for two months running, when I fucked up my knee in an acting class, and once, I wore out a treadmill—I don’t think manufacturers of the cheap ones expect people to walk them to death.

This is so damn true. At one point in my life, I went from hostessing to waitressing, and the difference was night and day. I have high arches, and as a hostess, standing at the till all day, there's no way I could've survived full time work. I'd be in pain after mere 4 hour shifts, and after 8 hour shifts I'd come home limping and pop T3's for the pain. When I switched to waitressing, my feet barely ached at all, even though I was working full time.

I honestly don't know how cashiers and other people who work stand-in-place jobs can do it.
