Harmless words/phrases/slang that annoy you

Must be harmless, so no "gay as an insult" allowed. Bonus points for your reasons being petty or nonsensical.

"Reblog this!" Because it is always following some sob story or horrible injustice and followed by a comment about how you are a horrible person if you don't reblog some shitty Tumblr post.

That kind of emotional blackmail really pisses me off.

Even if it was something I would have otherwise been inclined to reblog, posting a line like that guaranteed I was not gonna do it.

I hate "pup". As in, calling dogs/puppies "pups". Especially adult dogs. "Pupper" as a cutesy dog slang also grates on my ears. No real reason on "pup", it just sounds old-fashioned and stupid. "Dog" is already only one syllable, stick with that.

Alternatively, I think "kit" sounds adorable, but it's not in common use for kittens. Maybe it's because "pup" sounds like "poop".

Just curious, do you pronounce "pup" with a long U sound?

I also hate "pupper" AND i hate "doggo". If you wanna be cutesy just say puppy, it sounds nicer.

I so agree with you on doggo.

It's probably because a kit is technically a baby fox.

I didn't read this closely enough at first and I thought you meant people calling their RP characters 'pup' and it sounding like dogs and I was thinking, "....but that's not where the word comes from in that case?" and then I realized you were talking about actual dogs, haha.

Not that many people actually call their characters 'pups' anymore I think.

U for you, because I'm old fashioned and used to the snooty side of the internet, where I probably used "U" and almost got kicked off of a forum for it.

It's like, I get it, the internet's no longer just for nerds who are nitpicky about spelling. But there's still a mean part of me that can't help but think, "is it really that hard to type three damn letters?"

(Yes, I realize for some people, it is.)

"Congrats." I don't even know why it bugs me, it just always has.

"Lovelies," when people with blogs address their readers as such. It seems popular with radfems and TERFs addressing their "lovely" cis female readers as they give friendly reminders to be careful of the evil "males" (meaning both actual men and trans women). Not all blogs that use it are like that, but it makes me think of them when I read it no matter what the context is.

Where I live, a lot of kids call their grandmothers "Mom Mom." It irritates me a lot. But I'm not originally from here, so that's probably why. I imagine that it's very much a regional thing.

some little kid said I looked like her "bay bay" and I had no clue what she was talking about until her mom said that was her term for her grandmother. (I was not real thrilled. I don't want to look like anybody's grandmother. Especially since I'm not that old.)

Oh My God , this.

honestly I feel like it weakens your cause if you have to guilt and emotionally manipulate people into reblogging something. And a lot of people forget that people are on social media too.

Not everyone is in a race to virtue signal as the most socially aware person ever.

I got a private message like that when my mom was first in the hospital with terminal breast cancer, but not everyone knew. "Share or you don't care about cancer."

I'd been cheerful for the first time all day. I went from feeling better to bawling again. And actually initially typed up a "Fuck you" response back, but it was a group PM so it would've been humiliating, plus I knew the person who sent it would have been beside herself. I just politely asked her not to send me those things anymore.

But seriously, people, be careful. You don't necessarily know what your friends are going through.

SAME. Basically it comes off as people being self-righteous and patting themselves on the back about laying a dumb guilt trip down on people they barely know.

"Is this a bad time?"

If you have to ask, then you probably already know it is...

Re: Harmless words/phrases/slang that annoy you

(Anonymous) 2018-01-22 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Um, no, some people just always ask if it's a bad time, because they don't want to inconvenience anyone with something that could easily wait until later. Whenever I'm calling someone just to chat, I almost always start by asking if it's an okay time, which is the same thing as asking if it's a bad time, just phrased differently. And I have a friend who basically always starts with "Is this a bad time?"

"Dunzo," as in when a couple splits up or are divorced. "This celebrity couple is dunzo!"

"Preggers" or "preggo" for pregnant. (The second one just makes me think of pasta sauce."

I'm starting to get kind of irritated with "side gig" since recently I've read several articles that proclaim to be about side gigs but are really about people starting a new business on the side and eventually quitting their former regular job to focus on this new thing, and not about people working a second job of some kind. None of these articles said a side gig *had* to become your only gig, but that was the only type of example given and the assumption seems to be that everyone wants to quit their job and go freelance.

A lot of tech/business jargon these days.

A lot of abbreviations just annoy me, especially: info, combo. The expressions "my bad", and "fair enough". And, because it always makes my grammar sense twitchy when used in its new way, "woke".
