Laura Ingalls Wilder was my jam growing up. I recently bought the entire bookset to reread. What is your favorite book in the series?

My sister got the entire series for a birthday gift one year, and i read them all before she did.

I would say....On the Shores of Silver Lake is probably my favorite, followed by Little Town on the Prairie.

I have loved those stories forever. I also got a huge, annotated 'this is the real story' book for xmas a couple years ago, and that was amazing to read, too.

I think my favorites are Farmer Boy (I loved her description of food), Little House on the Prairie (the OG!), and These Happy Golden Years (I love watching Laura learn how to be a teacher).

Ha, yes, those are good ones, too. I was always a bit impatient with LHotP as a kid, because it made me think of the TV show, which i didn't much like. Golden Years *is* good, but it always made me sad, because i felt like Laura didn't really want to be married.

I mean - i'm sure she did, but as a kid, it didn't feel right. That and her friend Ida being all nervous and crying made me feel like it was a bad thing! Heh.

Ah, I never actually watched the show. I've seen clips from it and did not like it.

I watched it when i was a kid, because - what else was i gonna watch? It was so *not* the books, it just made me mad. But i still watched.

I love the first book because it's got most of the neat details of everyday life, but Farmer Boy for the food descriptions, definitely. It's an interesting contrast, Laura's relatively spartan upbringing and Almanzo's family with their huge farm and relatively wealthy lifestyle.

And the ice! The ice cutting/storing scene was always so amazing to me.

That scene was always fascinating to me too.

I loved the Little House books and had a nice boxed set when I was younger. No idea where they've gone now, sadly.

I even had a Little House on the Prairie cookbook that was interesting.

We made one of the muffins out of it when I was a kid and I can still remember their distinct taste. I should try to find the cookbook and replicate it again now that I know how to cook and don't need mom's help.

You can buy it for pretty cheap on amazon!

I’m always weirded out by this because the real story of what happened to them (and the reasons the books were written and edited the way they were) is so creepy and sad.

I don't know this story. I just know the books were published much later in life during the Depression and I think it was Rose who pushed her, but I don't know much of the story.

AYRT—Rose Wilder was an Objectivist who hung out with Ayn Rand and edited the books to be more Objectivist propaganda and downplayed all their failures (Alonzo and Laura ended up
losing their farm right about when The First Four Years ends, for example.) The Wilders/Laura failed utterly at homesteading but kept chasing the dream and promoting it, even though it fucked them over.

Re: I am totally loving

It sounds like they did eventually have a prosperous farm after moving to Missouri later, but it took years and years to build up (only to lose their savings to the stock market crash because Rose told them to invest it, and then started supporting themselves through Laura's books). Everything that happened after The First Four Years didn't make it into what is traditionally considered the Little House series, so ending that book with utter failure would have been a pretty downer ending (I know both Laura and Rose wrote about later events, including the move to Missouri, but I don't know if those works were aimed at children, since I haven't read them).

I think the modern version of homesteading is starting your own business, and I get so frustrated with the idea that this is what everyone should aspire to. No, I don't want to quit my job because I actually love my job. No, I don't want to be my own boss, because that would require doing a whole lot of bullshit that I don't enjoy.

Farmer Boy is my favorite! I love all the food. So many donuts! I also loved the bootmaking, ice-cutting, and the thing where his father will KNOW if he tunes out of the reverend's sermon.

I haven't read the books since I was little but Little House on the Prairie was my favorite. I need to reread the series because I don't remember well anymore.

Yesssss... I have this adorable blue boxset that I've had since I was a kid. I honestly don't think I could pick a favourite but am also now realizing I haven't read them in about 20 years and I suddenly really want to reread them all.

I read those books to pieces growing up. I honestly don't even know which one was my favorite, though I definitely didn't like The First Four Years as much, because it made me sad. All the books had so many details that I loved.
I remember once, years ago, going to one of those old-timey reconstructed towns, and I saw a candle-maker there, and I recognized it based on the description from the book. The tour guide was impressed.

Yes! I felt like I acquired some skills, reading these books, especially the Big Woods and Prairie books - so many things just carefully detailed and laid out. I always loved that.

The First Four Years *is* sad. I hate that they had such bad luck.

How neat! I bet he was. People don't seem to know much about stuff like that anymore, even though the knowledge is out there for the reading.
