How do I stop being so angry about politics

[personal profile] philstar22 2018-01-23 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
I'm just so angry right now, and it is so unproductive. I know part of it is because I don't have a job yet and can't help immigrants, so I get more angry because I feel helpless. But honestly, it is hard for me to keep up with the news like I need to and yet not get so emotionally invested. I don't know how to stop feeling so much rage and even hate for people like Trump and McConnell.

well, it's a tough question, because there's a certain measure of outrage and anger that's not only justified but necessary. But I think there are things that are important for a balance.

First of all, having outlets and things to keep you busy and interested and active and engaged with stuff that's constructive and apolitical. It doesn't have to be important, it just has to be something that's mentally active.

Second, setting limits on your exposure - trying to cut yourself off from news and news sources at a certain point once you go past what's necessary to stay informed, and developing the inclination and ability to just turn things off, and unplug, and do other things.

Third, developing the mental attitude that, you know, you need to preserve your own well-being, and that sometimes it's necessary to take a step back. And also you can't take the whole world on your shoulders. Just trying to make those mental adjustments and stay in healthy thought-processes - really the same thing you would do with any other harmful mental pattern, you know?

Anyway, that's how it seems to me, at least.

Maybe take a step back for a moment? Keep away from news/social media? You know, reduce the incoming negativity and give yourself a chance to recover/re positive aspects of your life?

Also, if you have the time & availability, maybe volunteering for immigrant services somewhere? helping them fill out firms, etc. maybe there are some organizations that work with immigrants & you can volunteer?

Hope things get better!

Yeah the political situation in the US sucks balls right now, but if you don’t have a job, that makes volunteering for an immigrant rights organization or charity slightly more feasible. Everything from filling out paperwork to holding clothing and/or food drives to English lessons could help someone. Look up local organizations and call or email to see what they might need help with. If you can’t find any local charities or nonprofits or whatever, email bigger regional ones and ask if they can put you in touch with groups near you, or help them if they need volunteers for stuff that can be done online or over the phone. Good luck!

You can't. Disengage. If that means not being able to hang out in some communities that are good but like to talk politics, so be it.

It's okay that you are angry. It's just a feeling, not a sin, or an action that has lead you to an unforgivable act. Your anger is real and valid, and you have a right to it.

Anger can be a great motivator for good, positive things, if directed elsewhere.

If you find you can't focus, I agree with others -- it's best to step back for while, even if all you have is a temporary distraction at the moment.

i gotta keep on top cause job (tm) but i confine self to headers only these days. get the real high level staqtus without getting frustrated with the detail.
