I remember the handwavy fanon explanation at the time was that it was a crap accent because Spike's natural accent was William's posh one and he was faking his Spike accent to sound cooler.

Or he needed a better dialect coach.

One of those two.

NA

If I was going to write fic with him in it, my explanation would be that he's a vampire and all the time he's spent in other parts of the world has muddled his accent. And maybe that his more egregious pronunciations were designed to annoy.

He based his accent on Anthony Stewart-Head's actual real accent - Giles' posh accent is fake.

I've met ASH a few time and, fair enough, JM is clearly aiming for something similar, but I think accents are not really his forté. It's okay, though - it makes bizarro Buffy-sense

Yeah, it worked for American TV 'cause we know fuck-all about accents that aren't American, so.... :)

Not fake exactly - more one of the options for ASH to use depending on context. I do similar - I can be full-on "Cambridge University" when I choose, but not in all situations.

JM got it some of the times but with wobbles.

I'm sure he was on his own for the accent early on. I think I remember reading somewhere that the white T-shirt he wore under his jacket was - at least initially - a shirt he already owned and he wore it as part of his wardrobe until it wore out. Like, he had to SUPPLY HIS OWN T-SHIRT. I assume Spike wasn't originally expected to become such a significant character, so they weren't going to sink a lot of money into things like a dialect coach, and by the time they might have, it was too late to bother because viewers were used to Spike sounding a certain way.
