I'm sure he was on his own for the accent early on. I think I remember reading somewhere that the white T-shirt he wore under his jacket was - at least initially - a shirt he already owned and he wore it as part of his wardrobe until it wore out. Like, he had to SUPPLY HIS OWN T-SHIRT. I assume Spike wasn't originally expected to become such a significant character, so they weren't going to sink a lot of money into things like a dialect coach, and by the time they might have, it was too late to bother because viewers were used to Spike sounding a certain way.
