Is there anything "good on the internet, these days?"

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Lately I've been finding a lack of places online that don't seem either annoying as hell or a complete waste of time. These days, it seems like you've either got clickbate, n Purity Culture and Anti nonsense, or groups of people complaining about someone else's internet drama and dumbfuck tumblr posts.

I dunno, I just miss active kinkmemes and active communities for squeeing and theorizing and shipping in general.

Same. People who enjoyed the show rather than complaining about the show.

Is the term "Purity Culture" the new "SJW". i'm out of the loop.

It's a separate term. It's a separate debate (over how much fiction influences reality in regards to fiction consumption) that's incredibly prevalent in sj heavy fandoms with people who take social justice seriously falling on both sides of the argument.

It's a separate term, but it has the same function of being a sneer word

No, purity culture is a specific subset of SJW, which involves being adamantly against anything in media or fandom that isn't 100% morally upright. Like villains and conflict in general.

purity culture is a specific subset of SJW

and, as a term/concept, it's equally valid as 'SJW'

ie, not very

It's valid enough to the people who use it.

Who likely don't give a rat's ass if it's valid to you.

It's valid enough to the people who use it.

Yep. Exactly. It's 100% a partisan term for people that you disagree with.

NAYRT: But... that's most media out there. Especially villains. WTF?

Re: Is there anything "good on the internet, these days?"

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's puzzling.

Actual Purity Culture = the batshit evangelical "Girls, be a perfect pure virgin who never even thinks about sex or you're WORTHLESS IRREDEEMABLE TRASH who will NEVER MARRY because GOOD MEN ONLY WANT VIRGINS" claptrap. I'm very familiar with that because I grew up in it. People have co-opted the term in fandom to mean fans who think that writing characters having sex is eeevil and ruins their wholesomeness, even if they're crazy violent characters who are strongly implied to have sex in-canon.

Agree. I miss kinkmemes. Also I can't fathom why Doctor Who doesn't have an active kinkmeme anymore, given that the amount of characters to write about has doubled and, at least on tumblr, the fandom is multi-shippy as fuck.

For discussion I use reddit if the fandom is big enough.

Same...unless the show is on hiatus then it turns into a bunch of people complaining.

Looking at you SVTFOE sub.

NAYRT - I've never had that, but I've had subreddits go dead silent when a show is on hiatus. Isn't that the best time to come up with speculation??

Not much different than any other place. Well, probably less crackfic.

active communities for squeeing and theorizing and shipping in general.

Me too. Although I will say reddit's an okay substitute - it's not perfect, I don't like the upvote/downvote system at all, but some subreddits are really good for discussion.

Otherwise... I think half the internet got cynical and half the internet got old. So it's hard to find people who really want to get into those things.

I love tumblr, but I'm pretty sure I have 70% of its users blocked, so.

I also really miss kinkmemes. Half the fic I ended up writing was because of kinkmemes and I blame their decline for why I haven't written much.
