Is the term "Purity Culture" the new "SJW". i'm out of the loop.

What is the truth.gif

It's a separate term. It's a separate debate (over how much fiction influences reality in regards to fiction consumption) that's incredibly prevalent in sj heavy fandoms with people who take social justice seriously falling on both sides of the argument.

It's a separate term, but it has the same function of being a sneer word

DA

So?

Re: Is there anything "good on the internet, these days?"

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
So we shouldn't grant it any more credence than that, and should recognize that it's just a sneer word.

Then what are we supposed to call the people who pitch fits over the existence of characters and plots that aren't 100% morally pure? Childish idiots?

Re: Is there anything "good on the internet, these days?"

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Just curious, have you ever used a sneer word for a group of people you disagreed with?

Re: Is there anything "good on the internet, these days?"

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I try not to, and I don't expect people to take it seriously as a thing if I do.

Re: Is there anything "good on the internet, these days?"

We don't. :)

Re: Is there anything "good on the internet, these days?"

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
So, there's no one out there that you think is completely annoying and ruining something you used to love?

Re: Is there anything "good on the internet, these days?"

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
No, purity culture is a specific subset of SJW, which involves being adamantly against anything in media or fandom that isn't 100% morally upright. Like villains and conflict in general.

Re: Is there anything "good on the internet, these days?"

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
purity culture is a specific subset of SJW

and, as a term/concept, it's equally valid as 'SJW'

ie, not very

Re: Is there anything "good on the internet, these days?"

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
It's valid enough to the people who use it.

Who likely don't give a rat's ass if it's valid to you.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
It's valid enough to the people who use it.

Yep. Exactly. It's 100% a partisan term for people that you disagree with.

Re: Is there anything "good on the internet, these days?"

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep! That's what the internet in the 2010s is all about, isn't it?

Re: Is there anything "good on the internet, these days?"

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
well, true

I've come to see that twitter is the place you go to get into fights about politics with strangers, tumblr is the place you go to get into fights about fandom with strangers, and dreamwidth is the place you go to complain about it all... and probably get into another fight about either, with an anon.

(As far as I can tell, Facebook seems to be about sharing click bait with relatives and people you haven't spoken to in half a decade, and Instagram is for being jealous of celebrities.)

Re: Is there anything "good on the internet, these days?"

Bravo. Amazing sum up of it all. I loled.

Re: Is there anything "good on the internet, these days?"

(Anonymous) 2018-01-29 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. And the thing is, with places like Twitter and Tumblr, it doesn't matter what you're even fighting about, how pointless the shit-flinging gets, and what we're doing to society - all that's important is that we keep getting aggravated at each other, and keep spending time on those sites, because the more time we spend there, the more richer some corporate interest who owns it gets.

There are CEOs stuffing thier pockets with our anger and envy and fear and everything else that makes us act like our worse selves and it's just... something we shouldn't keep playing into.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
NAYRT: But... that's most media out there. Especially villains. WTF?

Re: Is there anything "good on the internet, these days?"

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's puzzling.

Re: Is there anything "good on the internet, these days?"

Actual Purity Culture = the batshit evangelical "Girls, be a perfect pure virgin who never even thinks about sex or you're WORTHLESS IRREDEEMABLE TRASH who will NEVER MARRY because GOOD MEN ONLY WANT VIRGINS" claptrap. I'm very familiar with that because I grew up in it. People have co-opted the term in fandom to mean fans who think that writing characters having sex is eeevil and ruins their wholesomeness, even if they're crazy violent characters who are strongly implied to have sex in-canon.
