It makes me feel kind of bad to see people thinking they aren't comparable. Yes, Paranoia Agent is magnificant, but I think Death Note is too, just not quite in the same way. And I always thought Ichi and Light were really similar too.

"Talking it over with my husband, he pointed out that most Disney heroes are heroines, so maybe Pixar was just overcompensating... heh"

You know, I thought the very same thing instinctively, but when I sat down to count them, it's not true. Even supposing you take Tarzan as the cut off point of classic Disney animation there're more blokes (the ones after Tarzan mostly have male protaganists too - Emperor's New Groove /Atlantis/Treasure Planet/Brother Bear -).

Looking at the big hits that have a single protaganist, the breakdown goes like this:

Female = 8
Snow White
Cinderella
Alice in Wonderland
Sleeping Beauty
The Little Mermaid
Beauty and the Beast
Pocahantas
Mulan

Male = 12
Pinocchio
Dumbo
Bambi
Peter Pan
The Sword and the Stone
The Jungle Book
Robin Hood
Aladdin
Lion King
Hunchback of Notre Dame
Hercules
Tarzan

IMHO, YYH > DeathNote, Geass, whatever crap they churn out now. Seriously. YYH was my first fandom and will always have a special place in my heart as my first anime.

Oh yes, I've been passionately crushing on him since I was 13, back in 1989. God I feel old. :P

That abs pic is verrah nice!

(And I skip all the manga/anime/Heroes/Supernatural/Dr. Who crap too)

Holy shit, I didn't think anyone remembered that. I loved that cartoon. I didn't know there was a book! (youtube and library ho!)

Re: 114 OP

[identity profile] leinyan.livejournal.com 2008-07-08 01:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I still don't understand what people saw in the last book. Half of it was them sat around in some field or shrubbery complaining that they didn't know what to do next.

Re: 155 OP

His penis is pretty much the least attractive part of him, I wish I could erase the image of that from my mind forever. Still, I'm not buying how Pete Wentz is special. I never thought he was anything great even when I was a huge Fall Out Boy fan, and I especially won't now that I'm no longer interested in them or their music. I could argue every point you make but then the comment would get too wordy. Also making a point to admit that you're a dick, still makes you a dick, just a more open and obvious one.

160: OMG the Dot and the Line!!! I remember that cartoon! For years I thought I'd dreamed it!

163: OMGWTFBBQ Yowies!!!! I remember when you used to get them in Kinder Eggs!

OMG I am so old...

118. Since when does not-porn = fluff? Ever heard of gritty, plotty, canon-compliant gen fics? Sometimes those'll give you more canon-feeling "this is why I ship such-and-such pairing" than any pairing-specific fic around.

168. It's worth losing the thread of a movie just to stare at that man.

129

[identity profile] angeladunn.livejournal.com 2008-07-08 02:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I was just talking about that, yesterday!
And I completely agree with you. And that makes me sad...in a way.

Personal opinion timez:
Wall-E was a great movie, and I loved it... but I caught myself thinking 'why can't they make a story like that where a dorky, out of place girl gets the good looking guy?
Because that's basically what happens in all their movies 8/

Re: 139

(Anonymous) 2008-07-08 02:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Because people look more realistic and more like real human beings as opposed to plush dolls.

If I wanted realism I wouldn't go for big eyed humans with chipmunk noses but rather for modern designers in the line of IG’s Nishio or Inoue. Not to mention drawings are not supposed to represent reality but rather to enhance it and Mikimoto’s acting does nothing for me. I suppose it’s a matter of taste.

105. Normally, I can accept when people just use 'him' and 'her' and just use colors to denote who they're talking about, but I don't know which person to associate with which color, here. Pink... is the girl in pink, but the rest are kind of vague.
116. ...wow, that kind of makes me RAGE too.
122. I get a little annoyed when people put 'OP is obvious' when NO, YOU'RE NOT OBVIOUS AT ALL. You'd be obvious if you accidentally left your name in your secret (that happens). As it stands, I have no idea who you are, and I think most people who are reading this probably don't either.
124. ...not a Gary-Stu. You must be looking for the other Lamperouge brother. In any case, I don't really love Rolo to bits like you claim everyone else does, but I do feel very sorry for him.
145. ...I like how the text in this secret is arranged. Good job, OP!
150. ...don't we all?
167.

I need to watch Wall-E now.

Re: 129

[identity profile] capn-mactastic.livejournal.com 2008-07-08 02:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Please never mention that you believe being a housewife and mother prevents someone from being a good female role model around any of the female members of my family. It wouldn't be pretty.

Wife and/or mother are aspects of a person, not the be-all-and-end-all.

Re: 129

[identity profile] triestine.livejournal.com 2008-07-08 02:51 pm (UTC)(link)
what female-lead series are popular with boys

I think comics aren't that bad in this respect; see Modesty Blaise for example, or Wonder Woman, or the female heroines of the Marvel universe: all as badass as it gets. Which leads me to

Boys are trained not to identify with female characters unless the only thing about those characters that is female is their appearance.

I hadn't thought about this before, but... damn.

Re: 129

[identity profile] triestine.livejournal.com 2008-07-08 02:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Writing is autobiographic by default. You’re putting your own ideas in paper, you’re writing your own beliefs.

Er, literature =/= manifestos. It is actually possible to write about situations and characters that have nothing in common with the author. I'm sorry if your imagination or writing skills don't work, but it's hardly true of others.

[identity profile] ellyrianna.livejournal.com 2008-07-08 02:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Adrien Brody is, in my opinion, the hottest actor in Hollywood today.

Re: 129

[identity profile] triestine.livejournal.com 2008-07-08 02:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Females have little trouble relating to a male lead, but males (at least boys) often have trouble with female leads.

I'm afraid this is true, however it's a learned (in)ability, not something that's natural. Perpetuating the omission of strong or leading female characters is what contributes to the problem.

The beast was totally hotter as the beast!

@150: Probably said a lot, but does that make it okay for Chinese weeaboos to do it? :|

[identity profile] tsukinofaerii.livejournal.com 2008-07-08 03:32 pm (UTC)(link)
110: I think I know what you mean, but at the same time, without knowing you, I can't say "don't worry about it" or even "they're right". Sorry OP, but I know some people who are constantly surprised by good reviews, but still manage to be arrogant about it. It always makes me feel awkward, because addressing their behavior make me feel guilty, but it really needs to be addressed. :\

114: Yeah, me too. ;-; I'd want to keep my fanfic, but.. no canon. That just ended up being death. I'll never be able to read the first few without remembering the tripe at the end. *sigh*

118: WIN. :D

123: Wow, way to be judgmental? o.O maybe, you know, some people just like to dress loli?

129: I didn't even notice. o.o; Now it's going to bug me too!

150: Okay, this constantly pisses me off, and the gloves are coming off. If the Japanese can use gratuitous English in their day-to-day life, why the hell is it so horrible that we use gratuitous Japanese?! Grow the fuck up and let me speak however I gods damned want to without assholes like you telling me I'm doing it wrong. It's fandom—it's supposed to be fun. So why the hell does everyone act like "my way of expressing my love for X is so much more mature than your way"? Get over yourself Anon.

154: WIN! (Or, to piss off 150, すごい!)

120

(Anonymous) 2008-07-08 03:34 pm (UTC)(link)
hey. feel free to IM me sometime... I really don't want to fight anymore. I feel really shitty for some of the things I said, I realize now how little I understood about what was going on with you. Beh... you're probably not going to be checking for replies, but... shit, you remember Brandy. That means a lot to me.

122 OP

(Anonymous) 2008-07-08 03:38 pm (UTC)(link)
...I get ONE comment, and what the hell is this?

*groans*

Well, "obvious" as in "to those who know me". It's implicitly stated.
CRIPES.

Re: 129

(Anonymous) 2008-07-08 03:59 pm (UTC)(link)
But that sort of reads like toys are marketed to boys because boys buy more toys because toys are marketed to boys, doesn't it?

Re: 129

(Anonymous) 2008-07-08 04:05 pm (UTC)(link)
No, what universe do you live in? I'm probably younger than you are, but all the males I know watched and enjoyed Mulan, The Little Mermaid, and Pocahontas when they were younger.

There's just something fucking wrong if a male refuses to relate with a character based on sex/gender, marketing strategies or no. And that's a problem that badly needs to be addressed.
