That's pretty much my opinion too. I'm not saying queerbaiting never happens, especially if you count creators and actors teasing the fans in interviews, but a lot of it is based on nearly nothing.

I really want more representation for LGBT characters, and I'll be the first to agree that there isn't enough, but I'm not going to pick certain characters and then pitch a fit that they in particular are straight.

I'm seeing next to no buzz about Instinct for example, maybe because Alan Cumming isn't a cut young dude.

Or maybe because it's a police procedural on CBS, which is possibly the least youth-targeted thing imaginable on American broadcast TV

I think that a large chunk of fandom has no interest in LGBTQ characters unless it involves sex object of the month. Not many people in fandom seem to care that Shape of Water has a significant subplot about 1960s blacklists, because Giles is middle-aged and balding.

Maybe! I just don't think that Instinct is a good test case.

Well yeah I'm queer and I'm not interested in any characters that aren't hot, so... yeah?

tbh as fans of gay content why should we be any different from fans of straight content? plenty of straight people only watch mindless CW pretty people garbage for romantic content because the characters are attractive. tbh I have no interest in gay characters who are unattractive or too old for me to relate to culturally ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Well, first of all it reveals that the claimed "social justice" rationale for nagging creators into making ships endgame is, in fact, a lie. You're not really interested in representation, you just want to treat media as your personal kinkfill.

Note that unless you live under a rock, relating to people who don't look pretty or are older than you are is simply a fact of life. So the last clause is also a lie.

Okay so why are hets allowed to have their hot young pretty couples? Suddenly our LGBT ship is invalid because it involves two hot guys? Also that's inaccurate considering I've seen some "non-sexy" slash ships get hugely popular like Clint/coulson, johnlock, will/Hannibal, or almost any walking dead ship you can think of.

Straight people get likable characters from teens to senior citizens. Part of having "representation" includes characters who are not sexy or shippable, and being a part of (or ally to) LGBTQ communities include supporting people who don't turn you on. Fandom doesn't get to claim magical ally cookies if its advocacy includes all the same problems with race, age, and body image that are already problems within LGBTQ communities.

While those ships are not my thing, all are backed by a fair degree of personal attraction for them. I wouldn't call johnlock "non-sexy" given how many former and current cumberbitches are running around.

Giles/Hoffstetler would be cute as fuck provided what happened to Dimitri didn’t happen, and I’m not normally super into slash. But yeah, a lot of the time I can barely tell the two halves of a young hot slash pairing apart and I just don’t care about watching two Ken dolls kiss. Even most of my het pairings aren’t comprised of two hot young things.

I get bored by stories, whether original or fanfic, where the most important element is how hot the characters are. I don’t think shipping only because people find both characters hot is only a slash thing, though. And in my experience fic with that emphasis tends to devolve into romance novel and/or manly top/effeminate bottom clichés almost immediately.
