If we're talking about it in a fandom space, then I don't see the objection to having an opinion about it, you know what I'm saying?

If it's on your personal blog, then sure, whatever. If we're talking about it, then we're talking about it and that goes both ways. Sorry.

This so much.

I don't think the issue is with having an opinion, but rather with putting words in someone's mouth the second they mention their own opinion. There's a difference between

A: I like X/Y.
B: Oh, I don't like X/Y.

and

A: I like X/Y.
B: Well, that's okay as long as you don't romanticize it or write fic where X is a homoromantic demisexual barista who serves coffee to panplatonic bisexual med student Y because then X is subservient to Y and that's gross tbh.

I agree that it's wrong to assume someone thinks that the character is a homoromantic demisexual barista who serves coffee to panplatonic bisexual med student Y. You won't see any argument from me on that.

Exactly this.

Yeah, there was a lot of this in the trashfire that was BBC Sherlock fandom.

A: I like John/Sherlock
B: That's fine as long as John is topping otherwise it's PEDOPHILIA
A: um what
B: *doxxes A and harasses them out of fandom*

WTF?

I mean.

They were grown-ass adults when they met. Not even straight-out-of-high-school-yeah-they-can-legally-vote-but-are-still-teenagers adults, but actual living-on-their-own functional adults.

And how is it only pedophilia if one of them is topping and not if the other one is topping?

And I thought the Wincest "who tops" ship war was batshit!

To my awareness, no one ever actually said it was pedophilia if Sherlock topped. What happened was that a chunk of fandom really disliked the trend where Sherlock was written as this dark, sociopathic sex god who used and abused John to no end and John was his helpless little minion and sex slave. (They invented the term Dark Fuck Prince to describe this trope.) But over time, a small subset of the people who disliked DFP!Sherlock ended up becoming more extreme in their preferences, and so they became full-on anti Top!Sherlock. Not because it was pedophilia, but because they just didn't like Top!Sherlock.

Meanwhile, a couple of BNFs who went in super hard on Dark Fuck Prince Sherlock ALSO had a tendency of writing and/or drawing underage John being fucked or raped by DFP Sherlock.

And the people who hated Dark Fuck Prince Sherlock were largely the SAME people who were involved in the noncon/pedo wank that occurred around the same time. So there were a small number of people accusing Toplockers of being pedophiles. But they weren't saying, "You're a pedo because you like toplock." They were saying, "You're a pedo because you draw fanart of a very underage John being raped by DFP!Sherlock."

I don't agree with the behavior of the people doing the accusing. And the Sherlock fandom was a wanky mess, no argument there. But in my experience, people were not calling toplock pedophilia. People were calling a very specific and often shota-ish subset of toplock pedophilia.
