5000 times this.

I've never had this happen to me but I'm imagining like:

Person A: So I ship Jack and John...
Person B: Well, that's okay as long as you don't trans headcanon Jack into a 13 year old girl and make John her sexy autistic substitute teacher that explains what demisexuality is to the reader
Person A: what

I kind of agree and disagree. I don't really care how you ship something. But if you are suggesting that rape to love or whatever the trope is is a perfectly healthy relationship, I will sideeye you. Enjoy what you want in canon. Just don't pretend that this crap would make for a great real life relationship.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-03 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
"I don't really care how you ship something"

*proceeds to care very much*

I mean... I'm not saying you're wrong re: healthy relationships, but saying you don't care except when people do X, or Y or Z kind of undermines the claim that you don't care. At the very least, I hope you don't break out your list of Unacceptable Ways to Ship when people haven't even mentioned any of those things, otherwise you're exactly the kind of person OP is talking about.

Honestly, that isn't as weird as when people message BNFs about serious personal life. "So, my parents are abusing me. What should I do 17 year old fanartist I have never met??" At least the secret content is fandom related.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-03 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I find that kind of sad for a few reasons. One, that it might be from someone very young and/or isolated who doesn't have anyone else they can ask... that's just heartbreaking. Or two, from someone who's kind of lonely/needy who wants a connection with a BNF very, very badly and this is a way of getting their attention and establishing a very personal connection.

Never had this happen to me. Being a fandom nobody is good sometimes, eyyyyyyy. *finger guns*

(Anonymous) 2018-02-03 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
That nun's "don't make me cut a bitch" expression is cracking me up.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-03 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Who cares

(Anonymous) 2018-02-04 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
Everyone who commented, obviously

(Anonymous) 2018-02-03 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
If we're talking about it in a fandom space, then I don't see the objection to having an opinion about it, you know what I'm saying?

If it's on your personal blog, then sure, whatever. If we're talking about it, then we're talking about it and that goes both ways. Sorry.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-03 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
This so much.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-03 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think the issue is with having an opinion, but rather with putting words in someone's mouth the second they mention their own opinion. There's a difference between

A: I like X/Y.
B: Oh, I don't like X/Y.

and

A: I like X/Y.
B: Well, that's okay as long as you don't romanticize it or write fic where X is a homoromantic demisexual barista who serves coffee to panplatonic bisexual med student Y because then X is subservient to Y and that's gross tbh.

You don't need me to give you permission to ship whatever you want.
I don't need you to give me permission to think something is fucked up.

If you try to force me to stop disliking your ship, we have a problem.
If I try to force you to stop liking your ship, we have a problem.

I look at it this way...

(Anonymous) 2018-02-03 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretend like instead of fandom, the topic of the conversation is summer vacation.

Person A: I think I'd like to go to Thailand.
Person B: Well, that's fine as long as you don't support the sex trade!
Person A: ... what? But I'm not...
Person B: I mean, I'm TOTALLY OKAY with people going to Thailand as long as they're not engaging in sex trafficking or underage sex with minors or visiting those elephant sanctuaries that are abusing elephants and milking tourists for their money or doing hard drugs and you can't convince me any of that is acceptable because it's really not and also blah blah blah...

It's this type of conversation that rubs me the wrong way. Yes, some of the people who visit Thailand do some seriously skeevy, horrible things while they're there. But it's weird that people think this justifies jumping in and lecturing everyone who even mentions going to Thailand and pre-assuming that they're going to be banging underage hookers and supporting elephant abuse unless they're told that's problematic right away.

This kind of thing makes me 1000000000000 times more eager to do whatever they're telling me not to do.

At the very least, it lets me know who to block.

You tell people what you think about and like about someone's work, or even how you'd transform it to your own tastes; and are then offended that they tell you what they think about what you just said, and what they dislike about it? Well, you could have kept your own mouth shut, yes?

A) Having such variety and the very different opinions of millions of people is what makes the internet what it is. It's an EXCEPTIONAL thing. If you want to have this wonderful thing called 'internet' in your life then suck it up.

B) Love your fellow man/woman and be respectful. People have different opinions and they are to be respected.

If somebody is being outright offensive, then of course I think we can all agree it's not on. But if someone gets off on rape!fic then good for them - so what. I love RPS personally and I'm SICK of people telling me there's something wrong with me. Get a life for fuck's sake - there are real rapists and murderers out there in the real world.

Ugh, this though. Can the fandom gatekeeping just stop already?

Word.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-04 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
So what I'm seeing from this thread is that there are quite a few people who like doing exactly that (some of whom actually exhibit a total lack of self awareness and demonstrate it!) and want to argue "but it's the interneeeeeeet" or act like being all holier-than-thou and lecturing people about the fandom sins they might potentially commit is 100% okay behavior. SMH.
