16 is underage in some places and some people are grossed out by age gaps, especially when one person is very young.

Because relationships with age differences like that are often exploitative. The younger person is usually being "groomed" by the older person.

Not sure what OP has heard but I think the Duffer brothers made comments about seeing more of Karen and BIlly.

I thought that whole scene between them was funny so I wouldn't mind seeing more of them as long as he's just flirting/manipulating her and nothing actually happens.

I have to wonder how people think "seeing more of these characters" automatically gets translated into "Oh yeah, they're totally going to bone!"

This is very unlikely to happen. I think? The Duffers are interested in doing more with her and her unsatisfying marriage, and they often suck at women, but it seems like that having much to do with Billy is other people's assumptions.

I'm definitely not into underage stuff, Billy/Mrs. Wheeler included, but this is very, very mild as far as underage goes. He's seventeen, and he appears to be quite sexually experienced. In fact, I bet he has way more sexual experience than Mike's mom, who married her highschool sweetheart. Not that him being almost legal and quite sexually experienced makes it okay for her to have sex with him. It's still wrong. But unless the show tries to pass it off as a good thing that she's having an affair with an underage boy, I have zero problem with the storyline.

Because they are so often played by actors who are not teenagers. And sometimes I look at the character and don't see teenager. The actor for Billy is 23 and I'd maybe say he looks a little younger, but he definitely does not look 16 to me.

He's only 23? Jesus I actually thought he was older, like late-twenties because when he first turned up I legit thought he was Max's dad(as in he had her as a teen and somehow got custody, or stole her).

I didn't think he was that old, but he *does not* come across as a teen, even a 17 or 18 year old. At all.

Which is my biggest issue with most 'teen' characters; they're played by 20-somethings, and it always shows.

The facial hair and muscles he has did not even remotely scream teen to me, he is so obviously an adult and I really couldn't buy he was supposed to be 17/18 because... no. I mean tbh even Steve, Nancy and Jonathan don't look like teens much to me either but I can just about see them as 18.

Yeah it bugs me too, like it's nearly always 20+ actors playing teens and it's just weird, especially because I do think skews peoples perceptions as to what teens actually look like, because when I see shows that do use actual teens for teen characters, holy fuck do they look like kids(not that they are kids but they actually look as young as they are).

Can't really say that the gender-swapped American Beauty ends much better, regardless of what 80s sex comedies tell you.

The actor who plays Billy is old enough that I can't really get squicked about it.

I thought Billy was maybe gay, too, by how weird he was acting around Steve. The shower scene made it seem like he was going to molest Steve. So not like, gay positive representation, but more of the self-loathing gay guy trope who takes out his internalized homophobia on others by being racist, sexist, etc.

Don't want to see him hook up with that mom, for one, because I don't like either character but the mom is bland and boring to watch. For another, boo to treating high school student/adult relationships as funny or okay if the younger person is a guy. But mostly, I'd find those scenes just so dull.
