Why would them not making Dumbledore explicitly gay somehow have anything to do with whether or not J.K. Rowling is an ally?

Possibly because some people argue that her word-of-god-ing Dumbledore as gay meant she was only confirming him as gay to make herself look good, and that if she were really a good ally she would have taken the risk to make his sexuality canon instead of just Word of God canon.

I felt like she was strongly suggesting it in the King's Cross scene in DH. I mean, I wasn't surprised by the revelation.

That's not the same as it being definite

No, but I'm saying I don't think she decided it all of a sudden and announced it just to make herself look good.

It's amazing how times have changed. We were all so pleased to receive confirmation back then. Now it seems nothing JKR does is ever good enough.

There is an idea that she represents herself as an ally but is not willing to take substantive action that would follow from that.

How so? She is an outspoken and vocal ally on her social media. She is unafraid to risk controversy among her fans and critics.

Making a side character in her YA series explicitly gay is really not the bar on what it means to be a good ally, or most of you all wouldn't be good allies. YES, as a gay person, I would've loved to see Dumbledore clearly be gay in canon. But if it wasn't necessary for the plot or storytelling, it simply didn't have to be there. No one should be obligated to include something in their writing in order to prove they support LGBT equality.
