What is something you think everyone should know?

Basic cooking skills and safety. You need to know so you can eat healthy without chopping off your own fingers.

+1

And most basic meals aren't even hard, it's just putting ingredients together, plus the more you practice the better you get.

Yeah, learn how to make basic foods and maybe 1-2 full, fancy meals for company.

How to use a toolkit. Nothing fancy: hammer, screwdriver, tape measure, paintbrush.

I kinda... thought everyone did until recently, when I brought out my little kit to do stuff and the people in the room were all... 'wha?' Felt very strange.

How to resew a loose button or mend a draggled hem and ripped seam: little things that will multiply the life of your garments. (And therefore, save you money!)

How to manage your money. That should be its own class in highschool or something, along with a class on how banks work , overdrafts , debit cards etc.

Even as a High School graduate I was like , unbelievably dumb about banks and money. That combined with manic spending got me in some trouble.

I think I was lucky because I had a banker for a father so like... at age ten he was teaching me about basic banking and trading stocks and stuff. I had my own little folder where I would follow companies I had chosen week by week to see what their stocks were doing.

Did you manage to put your knowledge into use as an adult?

I did (do?). I still go through advisors at the bank itself when it comes to setting up accounts, etc, but I find myself always well-armed with knowledge and often go prepped with what I am looking for.

Agreed! That should be a mandatory class by your second or third year (especially since by third year you're applying to colleges and you'll be smarter about taking out money for it). I also feel home eeconomics should be a mandatory semester class (basic cooking, sewing stuff up etc skills should be part everyone's knowledge base. And a little plumbing, mechanic and electric know how should be included).

Betty Crocker was not a real person.

The gas gauge on a vehicle tells you which side the gas tank is on. Next to the little image of a gas pump is a triangle/arrow pointing left or right. The side it's pointing towards is the side with the gas cap.

Cook, clean, do laundry, and treat others with respect. I feel these are basic necessities in taking care of yourself and dealing with others.
