Is it possible for people to look stylish wearing fandom merch?

(Anonymous) 2018-02-13 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
no subtle stuff like disney bounding or whatever

Re: Is it possible for people to look stylish wearing fandom merch?

(Anonymous) 2018-02-13 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Sure. Keeping it to one item (a tee or sweatshirt, shoes, a backpack, etc) helps.

What's your definition of stylish? I mean, most of my merch is just plain t-shirts, so jeans and t's isn't really 'stylish' to me anyway, just casual.

Yeah, I think so.

Unrelated, but I saw a woman with a leg full of Disney tattoos, from Frog Tiana, to the Poison Apple, and Genie's Lamp. It was really cool.

I have a co-worker who has just the right build, looks, and attitude to rock kawaii in a professional context, so yes, it can be done.

Depends on what the item is and how well it fits with the rest of the outfit? T-shirts or goofy OTT character hats/scarves/socks aren't really "stylish" but something more subtle like an N7 jacket or a patch/pin/keychain/wallet can look totally fine.

I think the key to it is buying good quality merch, coordinating everything else well, and making some effort to conceal your power level. If you're rolling around town in a full pikachu gijinka costume you'll get weird looks. A sharp dressed dude who pulls out this as his wallet is just going to get compliments on his sweet wallet.

Sure, as long as it's restrained and reasonable.

Does it fit well? The majority of looking good in clothing is about whether it fits you properly.

And it depends on context, an understated black t-shirt with a logo and jeans works is good for a bar event, especially if you have the body to rock it.

What do you mean by stylish?

Hell yes! My little Star Wars flight suit backpack is hella stylish.

Re: Is it possible for people to look stylish wearing fandom merch?

(Anonymous) 2018-02-13 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Depends, but yes?

A fannish baseball cap looks as stylish as a normal baseball cap, so it depends on whether you think baseball caps are stylish.

A fannish T-shirt looks as stylish as a plain T-shirt in that cut and color. If the fit of the shirt and the main colors flatter you, then I'd say it would be a T-shirt that is stylish, to the extent a T-shirt would be considered stylish in whatever context applies.

There's a lot of fannish jewelry out there that is lovely.

I can see some more extreme stuff being pulled off by someone doing a very hipster look, but whether that's stylish is a matter of taste.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-13 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
For some definition of stylish and if the merch is relatively subtle, sure. It also helps if you're physically attractive, because people who are physically attractive have a lot more leeway when it comes to fashion. Or "fashion", as the case may be.

Sure. Especially if they’re super attractive. That’s why my TV presenter friend can get away with Slovenly Chic while I look like a slob when we wear sweats in public.

SG-1

I've just started watching this (after years of hearing about it) and damn, it's *such* fun. (Currently 6 eps into S3.)

Wish I'd watched years ago when there were more comms for it.

It's a pretty good show!

It's a very fun show

The problem for me is that there's so much of it (especially when you include Atlantis) and I feel like I cant go back and rewatch it without getting sucked in.

Also it dies feel a little dated now but that's less of an issue.

How exciting! You're at peak SG1, I think.

Re: SG-1

It is fun, although I remember watching the pilot after finding it at a video rental place (I never saw it when it was on Showtime because I didn't have premium cable) and absolutely hated it. I had loved the movie and didn't appreciate the clunkier special effects, props, and costumes on the show (the awesome CG morphing headdresses was the best part of the movie and replacing that with either not-so-great CG or helmets that sort of flop open is going to be a disappointment). I also thought the nudity was pointless and was annoyed that it was basically a matter of "IT'S PREMIUM CABLE HERE ARE SOME BOOBS!" Finally, let's not forget Sam Carter's infamous "reproductive organs on the inside" speech (which the show later acknowledges was completely stupid, bless their hearts, but at the time I was definitely going to deduct points for that).

When it appeared in syndication and I got to see more of the actual show, I started to like it a lot more. It improved over time. When it jumped channels to SciFi/SyFy I started watching it regularly, although I missed pretty much all of the last season.
