What a tumblrey comment that feels like, lol. I'll just assume OP doesn't actually watch figure skating ("REASONS!") and happened to see one performance of a song she liked. Also happened to notice one of the skaters is non-white, coincidence? Hmm..

what did you mean by this

(Anonymous) 2018-02-15 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
What aren't you understanding? Tumblr is more likely to cream themselves and say WATCH IT THIS IS SO IMPORTANT GUYS if they can make it a social justice points thing

(Anonymous) 2018-02-15 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
... actually the "because reasons" thing is part of what the OP was reacting to (black text) rather than the OP's comment (purple text).

(Anonymous) 2018-02-15 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
I realize. My whole comment was reacting to the original comment, not OP.

goes and watches Blades of Glory again

I don't understand what this secret is saying.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-15 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
The text in purple is the secret!OP, commenting on the things in the rest of the secret. They dislike the opinion expressed by the person they're quoting because they praise these particular skaters for doing things that (in OP's opinion) all skaters do.

Thanks!

I can see why it would make you grumpy. The commenter is showing that they don't really understand the sport, yet are speaking almost as though they're an authority, claiming to like this pair because they're not like the other pairs because... they possess traits that all pairs are supposed to have. It's like saying that you don't usually watch American football, but you loved that the team in that game worked together to keep the opposing team from scoring a touchdown.

+1

(Anonymous) 2018-02-15 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
Oh si. And tbh, I take it the original comment maker hasn't watched many dancing competitions either...because it's the same thing there. If you're not attentive to your partner, then it's not gonna look good nor will it go well.

I don't think the commenter is really presenting themselves as an authority - they start out admitting they don't watch skating usually - but there are degrees of sheer cluelessness that are cringe-worthy even from outsider enthusiasm.

I get what they mean, about the pair not outshining each other. I only watch ice skating during the Olympics, but I noticed that sometimes for some pairs, often one seems a lot better than the other, or if you have experience with doing stuff in pairs (such as ballroom dancing) you can tell that one skater messed up because the other one wasn't supporting them. But the French pair in the current Olympics are really in sync. My mom and I the whole time wondered if they were dating because the chemistry and union between them while skating is just remarkable. They're really special together. It also feels like they're not trying to be perfectionists but are just having a lot of fun about skating and skating with each other, like they're just psyched to be sharing the experience of the Olympics together. It reflects in the performance.
