LOL. This is the fanfic equivalent of the good ol' customer service "I'm never going to come to this store again", i.e. the person delivering it clearly feels like they've laid down a righteous burn, but the poor SOB who has to deal with it just thinks, "Thank god and good riddance".

Yeah it doesn't seem like it was meant to be a burn. More just preemptively answering the natural response to the secret which is "well, then fewer people will read your fic."

I wouldn't call it "agreeing", per se. Imagine this scenario at say, a pot luck gathering.

Person A: [puts a cake on the table] I made chocolate cake! I know not everyone's crazy about chocolate, so it's fine if not everyone wants a piece. There's plenty of other cakes to try, too.
Person B: Well, eating someone else's cake is exactly what I'll do.


Like... I'm struggling to see how that's "agreeing". It mostly just seems ungracious. If I were Person B and disliked chocolate cake, I'd have something else, but I sure wouldn't go out of my way to tell the person who baked chocolate cake that I'd be avoiding their contribution because jesus, manners.

I'm not sure that the analogy exactly fits between secret!OP and someone who is bringing chocolate cake to a food gathering. I could see the analogy working if I was, like, going and leaving comments on their fic saying the same thing. But this is a secrets comm, and I don't see how it's ungracious to say, you know, "Well, fine."

Nayrt - The thing is, it's 100% unnecessary to tell someone you're not going to read their fic, so telling someone that you're not going to read their fic seems weird. Like why go through the effort to inform someone of that when they haven't asked you? It feels like you're trying to make a point of some kind.

What reason did OP have for posting their secret? What reason do any of us have for saying anything on this website? What's the difference between me replying to the secret and OP posting the secret in the first place?

Nah, the scenario is more like bringing a plate of cookies to a pot luck and then refusing to divulge the ingredients.

Guests see the plate and wonder what's in the cookies. Some guests just want to know what flavor the cookies are (white chocolate? sugar cookies? macadamia nut? peanut butter? coconut?) bc maybe they're curious or maybe they just don't like sugar cookies. Some guests are vegan. Other guests have nut or gluten allergies that could be triggered.

Guests wonder about the contents and the cookie provider says "well I guess you'll just have to try them and find out! They're delicious, I promise!"

So some guests try them (the guests who like every type of cookie and don't have dietary restrictions to worry about), but the guests with allergies and the guests who hate certain flavors and the guests who don't like surprises say, "okay, well, no thanks. I guess I won't eat your cookies."

That analogy would hold up if there were no tags on the story. There are tags. Fandom, Pairing/character(s). That's like bringing your cookies and labeling them "peanut butter cookies," but not listing out the entire recipe. If you're someone who can't eat wheat or eggs, then you're going to have to pass on the cookies. They might not have those ingredients, but there's a strong possibility that there's something you don't want in there. But if you're just looking for peanut butter cookies, well -- they're right there under the peanut butter cookie sign.

I feel like at best, it's telling OP something they've already acknowledged is a possibility, so I think... for what purpose? Why go out of your way to say "I'm not gonna read your fic"? It sounds a tiny bit flouncy, even if the anon didn't mean it that way. And I'm skeptical they didn't mean it that way.

Really? Because in your analogy, OP is the snotty cashier going, "Well, if you don't like the way we do things, you can go elsewhere!"

Well, no. More like, "If people don't like the store policy, I'm more than happy for them to go elsewhere." That's a very reasonable stance. That way, the customer isn't disappointed or upset, and the cashier doesn't have to bear the brunt of an upset customer.

But this isn't the store. The store, in your analogy, would be the website where OP posts and does not tag their fics.

This is an entirely separate place that has no connection to OP's fics where they shared an opinion about how they don't like to tag their fics.

Like others have said, if you have a good summary and are at least tagging the characters/pairings, then cool. Personally I like to err on the side of tagging more than less just because some people search for stuff through the tags.
