I certainly don't thing fic authors need to go overboard.

I totally agree with this. Especially on AO3, you see people go way the fuck overboard with like 40 different tags on a single story, or tagging every single character who makes a background appearance. It's a huge pain in the ass, and at this point, my eyes just automatically skip over all of those fics anyway.

I really appreciate tagging in general, though - it makes stories so much easier to find and filter as a reader, and I'm thankful for anyone who does it. Just a few tags for the central concepts, characters, and topics of the story makes things so much easier.

The 'tagging for background appearance' thing is annoying not only for people looking at the tags to see if there's anything they want to avoid and being met with a veritable wall of superfluous bullshit, but also for fans of the characters or ships they tagged for that purpose.

I don't care if your A/Z fic has X/Y in the background. I want X/Y fic. I don't want to know about your A/Z fic, I don't want it to appear on my lists, or searches, I don't want to ever see it. Unless X/Y is the focus, STOP TAGGING IT WITH X/Y.

I personally prefer when people tag any non canon ships that are in their fics whether they are the focus or not - I have a small handful of NOTPs and accidentally running into them in the middle of an otherwise delightful fic can sometimes be a bit like eating a delicious sandwich and finding a hair or a piece of fingernail on it. With your mouth. Eeeuurrrgh.

There are some pairings that make me physically sick and I just don't want to see them.

The best solution for those pairings is to be mentioned in the other tags, though, not in the relationship one. Makes searching for specific things a lot easier and doesn't clutter up the pairing search, but still helps avoiding if needed, too.

I've seen that as "background X/Y" a couple of times, which seems like an alright compromise for people looking to avoid NOTPs.

Same. A few tags - in addition to a summary or instead of one - definitely can help sell me on a fic or ward me off, so I appreciate some tagging. It's also nice to be able to search for fic using tags.

It's just not necessary to go all out and tag *everything* (unless, as someone mentioned below, there's a reason for it) or use tags that are rendered unnecessary by some of your other tags, e.g. you don't need to tag for "mild peril" if you're already tagging for "extreme violence."
