Out of all the different kinds of digital piracy out there, I’m probably least simpathetic to pirating recent fiction. Textbooks or out of print stuff don’t bug me as much, but I just bought some ebooks from a children’s book author whose work I loved as a kid, who was about to lose her house. I’m not even a fan of film piracy, but the audience for most fiction is smaller and if an author’s books don’t sell because they’re being pirated it can even fuck up future book deals for them.

Agreed. Pirating books, especially from small authors, is shitty.

AYRT—I work for a public library, and I’d probably shrug at anyone pirating, say, Dan or Sandra Brown, James Patterson, or Danielle Steel, but unless an author is practically an industry by themselves, yeah, pirating can actually make the difference between them getting their next book published vs being homeless.

I'm broke. I always check the local library first if I can't afford a book. And I always check the local used bookstore too. But sometimes I actually need a book for some sort of research. Or I already own a physical copy of the book but want an electronic copy (not going to pay for a book a second time).
