This is one of those things where it seems so impossible that I can hardly even imagine what set of standards you're using to reach that conclusion. I mean, like, don't get me wrong, I'm fine with that, I just really don't understand how it could be the case. It just feels like we must have watched different movies somehow.

OP here

I feel all of the fight scenes in TLJ were bad. There was nothing that really explored the characters through the fight. With fight scenes like Vader/Anakin vs Obi-Wan, even the very first one, there was so much character exploration in those fights. Luke vs Vader are wonderful character pieces that show Luke growing right before our eyes. There was nothing in the throne scene. During the fight itself, Rey and Kylo were together but not really fighting as a unit, not to the extent that it was a character beat. I didn't feel that this was a culmination of something. It wasn't until Kylo asked her to stay (after the fight) that there was any tension. Their opponents were faceless people who said nothing so it's no different than fighting droids. Plus, it wasn't entertaining. The fight between Kylo and Luke was anti-climatic because they don't really do anything to explore what went wrong between them and I just felt that so much. Luke doesn't try to explain himself. Kylo doesn't say his side of things. It's just a waste of potential.

TFA wasn't really a fight in my eyes. She's basically trying to run away and he's not really giving his all. There's more interesting character development in it but it's not a very interesting fight.

It's nothing like Maul and Obi-Wan. The mirroring in the fight itself where Obi-Wan initially takes the stance he took in the Clone Wars - a fighting style he learned in response to his master's death - and then he goes back to the stance his master used to fight Maul and lost. Maul uses the same stance he used back then, showing that he never learned while Obi-Wan did, which reflects how Maul never learned to overcome his Sith upbringing but Obi-Wan transcended his anger and understands Maul now. It's an amazing use of fighting to show the characters.

Plus, it's so awesome to see Obi-Wan as such a badass. Having seen all their other fights, to see that Obi-Wan can take down someone like Maul in three strikes is a true master of the art and I loved it. I loved everything about it.

I'm just glad that this show finally killed Maul. I don't care if it was Lucas' idea, it was a *terrible* notion to bring him back after he got bisected by a damn lightsaber in E1. Especially terrible since the whole reason seems to be "but he looked SO COOL!" Cool character designs are NOT hard to come up with for a series like Star Wars.

God help you if you say this in hearing of his rabid fanboys, though. Good god, some of them still insist he's STILL not really dead yet.

I never thought he looked particularly cool, tbh. The whole face paint and horns thing just looks like someone who's into body modification to the point where they don't care about holding down a regular job.

Personally I hated Spider Maul in Clone Wars but Rebels did really interesting things with him. He planted seeds in Esra's arc that, frankly, the show forgot to cultivate and were sadly forgotten.

Honestly, I agree. And I'm not a Darth Maul fan at all, I think his whole design is KEWL MAN, but the sequel trilogy fights have been oddly flat.

For some reason I find the art style of that series deeply annoying.
