Why are people acting like "Anyone can be a Jedi" is some revolutionary idea never seen in the Star Wars saga until TLJ? Did y'all not see the prequels, The Clone Wars, or Rebels? Or read any of the supplementary books and/or comics? "Anyone can be Force sensitive" is the established norm. The Skywalker dynasty is the anomaly.

+1
This is my feeling. Rey being a nobody is fine but the way that people pump it up as this big thing feels so stupid. It's been clear from ANH that the Force is in everyone.

I guess it's a conflation of a few different things - the idea that the Force is genetic and the fact that the Skywalkers have the most genetics and are therefore the best at being Jedis and have important force destinies.

So it's not just that Rey is force-sensitive, it's that she's also mega-powerful without having any special chosen one genetics.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-18 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Except she does?? It's pretty explicit that she is the new Chosen One...

Shmi Skywalker wasn't packing any Force super genes. Then boom, Anakin. Big grand Force appointed destiny tends to equal big grand Force appointed powers in SW. Same follows for Luke, Leia and Kylo Ren.

Luke, Leia, and Kylo Ren all have big grand Force appointed powers because they're direct descendants of Anakin and so they got the really good midichlorian genes. That's the whole thing that people are objecting to when they talk about Skywalker genetics. That's the whole idea that people have a problem with.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-19 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Or maybe because they also had their own huge destinies. Luke and Leia destroyed the Death Star, had a huge part in the success of the Rebellion, and then Luke redeemed Anakin/Vader directly leading to the destruction of the Empire. Then Kylo becomes the focal point of the First Order clusterf*cking the galaxy even worse than the Empire did.

Admittedly its a bit of a "the chicken or the egg" situation - did they get the OP Force powers because of Anakin and the pivotal roles in galactic events happened because of them, or were they already destined for those roles regardless of genetics and got the Force powers to carry them through?

I don't know... I always thought Yoda was the most powerful Jedi in the saga. And he's not related to anyone.

A lot of people have little to no interest in Clone Wars/Rebels/books/comics, and try not to think about the prequels.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-19 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Your lack of interest in something doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Pretending that TLJ invented the idea of a random person having Force powers is like giving Stephen King credit for inventing the ghost story because he's the only horror author you've ever read.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-19 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
I just think that it's weird to act like people are ignoring some huge chunk of canon because they haven't seen the TV series.

And OP didn't say they thought it "invented" the concept anyways, just that it "came right out" with it.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-19 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Since the TV series is canon, technically they ARE ignoring a hunk of canon if they haven't seen it. :-)

OP is acting like TLJ is the first piece of Star Wars lore to "come right out" and say that people who aren't Skywalkers can be powerful Jedi. I'm pointing out that it's been established over and over in every form of canon (movies, books, comics, TV shows, video games, etc) again that anyone can be a powerful Jedi.

Is it so strange that fans of a movie series might not care about, follow, or consider a CGI TV series that plays on the Disney channel to be canon? Do you feel this passionately about the canon status of the Star Wars Holiday Special?

(Anonymous) 2018-02-19 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
I don't care if you watch it or not. It's still canon. When Disney bought Star Wars, they provided fans with a list of supplementary material that is considered official canon. Needless to say, the holiday special wasn't on that list. :-)

You seem to be arguing that because you're not interested in something, it shouldn't count as canon. I find that attitude strange.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-19 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not arguing that it shouldn't be canon, I'm arguing that it's bizarre to act confused as to why people don't care about or seem to have no knowledge of the supplementary materials. Of course many people have not consumed them and have no desire to. Therefore, they're going to be far more interested in and excited about what the main film series confirms, not what is confirmed in books/comics they don't care to read or TV series they don't care to watch.

Rey Skywalker stans were extremely aggressive in pushing their fannish interpretation of TFA as the only reasonable interpretation while TLJ was in production, part of that fueling some rather ugly anti-Reylo wars. (Not my ship, but still...)

(Anonymous) 2018-02-19 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
Apparently they're still pushing it.

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2018-02-19 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
Sure, but the smug self-righteousness that the next movie will vindicate their Narrative Laws of the Star Wars Universe(tm) and we're just a bunch of idiots for waiting to see what the next movie does has been kicked back a few notches.

I have my own theories about what Episode IX will bring, but I don't care if they'll be vindicated or quashed. Throwing a fit because one's personal fan theory didn't get scratched by a creative team is the kind of entitlement that gives fandom a shit reputation.
