What movie/tv/game genres do you want to see more of?

(Anonymous) 2018-02-24 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
It doesn't have to be the same genre for all three.

More scifi/fantasy movies and tv. More scifi or fantasy that explores different cultures and species and how they interact.

I want more horror games that don't rely on jump scares.

I'd also love some more horror TV that isn't sexualized or gory.

And for movies, I want more scifi!

Yes to the second one. And also movies as well. I don't entirely mind gore. But I much prefer horror tv and movies that are psychological, thrillers, and just plain scary without having to make people jump or gross them out.

Yeah, I am a total wimp with jump scares. I really hate them. I can recognize that there is some artistic merit or accomplishment in a great jump scare, but I just don't like them. I also hate shock-value gore and torture. But I do like creepy, eerie things. It's why I think Sixth Sense is one of the better horror movies, because it just creates a creepy atmosphere with minimal jump scares, and it's a story that exists independently instead of something built around a series of attempts to make the audience scared.

I just think they are such a cheap way to make people scared.

I always like fantasy, and I even like your stereotypical medieval Europe-inspired setting. I just want more badass female warrior leads that aren't hyper sexualized, and gay leads. I don't mean this in a SJW way or anything. I'd just genuinely rather watch a gay romance or a ferocious Viking woman wielding an enormous battle axe than your dime-a-dozen heterosexual stuff.

Yes.

Agreed. It'd force the writers to be a bit more creative, for one thing, and that has the potential for some epic storytelling.

Anime with BOTH yuri and yaoi in it. (the only one I know is Shin Sekai Yori)

Or, you know, non-anime, too - specifically live-action fantasy or sci-fi. But not like, LGBT-genre stuff. I'm gay, and I have zero interest in shows about "gay issues". I just want to see beautiful men and beautiful women making out with other beautiful men and beautiful women while having a plot that is bigger than coming out of the closet.

Also, the rule is the gay men and gay women have got to be leads, not just sides.

Also acceptable: bisexual male protagonists.

Fantasy settings that are inspired by other parts of the world, not just the same European-style setting, which I do enjoy but I'd love to see other cultures be adapted into a fantasy setting.

I don't know if it would count as a genre, but I want more romance stories/subplots where a woman is the romantic "aggressor" towards a man and is the one to initiate, direct the course of things etc. and where she is the one who does any saving that needs doing while the man is the one getting saved. Give me all the reversal of the stereotypical roles kthx.

Also LGBT books/movies etc. where the LGBT characters are just...living their lives, as opposed to everything being about Teh Gayness and How Society Attacks And Ruins Everything For Teh Gay Folks. I mean, being non-straight myself i GET that this happens but gdi that does NOT MEAN that every story HAS to have it loud and proud and IN YO FACE. Let us have normal storylines ffs. Let there be a romance where the entire world is NOT trying to break them up or whatever. Let their orientation be just another thing about them rather than the main focus of their entire being. Let there be LGBT protags in NON LGBT SPECIFIC media. Like, say, a fantasy warrior who happens to be a lesbian but no one Makes A Thing about it, she just kisses princesses instead of princes. And give me some fuckin happy endings once in a damn while.

Oh yeah, I think I'd be more interested in het romance if there were more "dominant" women pursuing men, and more Dudes in Distress being saved. Bonus points if the woman looks a bit more physically strong than the man.

I would seriously love more of both and especially more of the first one.

I'm actually editing a novel with the hopes of getting it published where the main pairing is done that way. Yup, they're gay, they're totally into each other, and it's totally secondary to the plot and no one cares or raises an eyebrow at it in the story.

Re: What movie/tv/game genres do you want to see more of?

Not particularly into movies or games, but for TV I want more good, original comedies (like The Good Place for example). I'm so tired of the typical "white manchild irritates the fuck out of his wife/girlfriend/roommate/friends" sitcoms.

And you didn't ask, but for books I really want more with LGBT+ characters that AREN'T sci-fi or fantasy. You can find a ton of sci-fi and fantasy books with queer characters but very rarely in just regular fiction or mystery or whatever. I love mystery/suspense books but they're almost all very tradtional/"safe"/het-oriented. Why can't the female FBI agent who was to work with a new partner that annoys the hell out of her at first but she eventually falls in love with, fall in love with a female partner? Why can't the hotshot detective dude have a husband and kids at home instead of a wife?

Adventure TV/film. It's such a good genre and there can never be enough of it. True, free-flowing adventure.

I want to see longer or more complex stories being made into high-budget miniseries or series like GoT rather than movies.

I'd be up for more fantasy stuff, but also action/adventure, period drama.

I also want some more Band of Brothers style historical/war documentary series with good casting.

IA with the first one. It's so frustrating watching people try to fit a bunch of weird complicated ideas and plots into movies sometimes. You almost want to just, like, yell at them. Like, TV is right over there, just go and make a TV show!

Re: What movie/tv/game genres do you want to see more of?

Haha. Yes! Some science-fiction movies especially are like "they're on earth. now they're in space. now they're 500 years in the future. now there's a moment of possible sexual tension but I don't actually know who that girl is. now they're all dead."

I understand why there are so many companion novels that follow on from those movies now. They leave people very unsatisfied in terms of explanations.

I think I find the less dramatic and tense parts of a story just as interesting sometimes as the big plot points too. I would have been happy to watch hours of little moments in Harry Potter because I loved reading about all the different lessons and things.

I agree with the first one but it MAJORLY SUCKS when they get cut. Thinking of Sense8, which was a high-budget action sci-fi series. Got cancelled after season 2, and of course, season 2 ended with a big cliffhanger. At least with movies, you get what you get.
