Yeah I can see why the vegans were annoyed, being one myself. People have no right to brag about how "happy" living beings are before they're killed at a fraction of their normal lifespan for something that is not necessary to our survival. If he were doing this to cats or dogs, he'd never work in hollywood again, but a baby sheep? Who cares? It's on the same level as a rock or cardboard.

Pratt was too flippant about it, sure. But most reasonable people understand there's a difference between animals people view as pets, and animals people view as food. Me, I'd prefer that the animals I eat live as happy of a life as possible.

Yep. I could never go vegetarian or vegan, I enjoy the taste of meat, but I think anything that's being eaten (even veggies and shit) should be taken care of to the best degree possible and killed humanely and with the least pain.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-26 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
What's the difference then? Other than societal taboos. In some asian countries, dogs are eaten just like cows. I guess the people in those countries just aren't as reasonable as you.

Troll alert.

Troooooooooooooooooooll.

DA

Is it not true that most animals we eat are slaughtered for meat long before they would otherwise die of old age?

Depending on the species, most of them would immediately starve or be killed by other natural predators like coyotes if we weren't raising, feeding, and protecting them. This is why there are no wild escaped chicken populations in the way there are feral cats. So I don't think "old age" and "natural lifespan" are 1) commensurate 2) terribly meaningful metrics in heavily domesticated food species.

Someone's never been to Kauai.

But I get your point. ;)

Re: dda

nayrt - Yep. And people are highly unlikely to go through the trouble of raising, feeding and protecting a lot of the animal species we currently consume for food if, you know, they aren't being consumed for food.

Re: dda

(Anonymous) 2018-02-26 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
So basically, we bred them specifically for food and they can't survive on their own at this point anyways so we might as well just keep eating them?

Have you ever been to the Cayman Islands?

Re: dda

(Anonymous) 2018-02-26 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
Uh, we breed domesticated animals into existence. They would peacefully not exist if we didn't breed them for the express purpose of being killed for food. No vegan is suggesting we set all domesticated cows and chickens free.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-26 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. That's not the point, though. The point is that bringing it up AND the whole "not necessary to our survival" reeks of either a militant vegetarian or more likely, someone pretending to be a militant vegetarian for teh lulz.

Re: Troll alert.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-26 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Would you consider someone a militant omnivore (or a troll pretending to be one) for bringing up the fact that vegans who avoid honey but consume almonds are hypocritical or that some people don't absorb nutrients from plant sources as well as they do nutrients from animal sources?

Just because I actually care about animals, instead of lying to myself while I continue to take from them, doesn't mean I'm a troll

Nope

(Anonymous) 2018-02-26 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
...for something that is not necessary to our survival.

May not be for your survival, but it is for me. I mean, sure, buying a package of ground beef from the store is a lot easier than going out and shooting/cooking the squirrels running around here, but if that were my only option, I'd be doing it.

Why? My body does not process some essential nutrients from plants very well. I tend to be anemic. Eating spinach or kale? All it does is turn my poop black and tarry. Eat red meat? Fixes me right up.

Not to mention, due to being on the tyramine-restricted diet for migraines, I cannot eat tree nuts or peanuts. On top of that, soybean products (like soybean oil, flour, and protein) are migraine-triggers for me.

That doesn't leave me many protein options in the plant world.

I'm happy being vegan works for you and your body, but not everybody's body is the same.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-26 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
Does Chris Pratt have all those health problems? Something tells me he doesn't. And even still, I've known vegans with a range of health issues and allergies who still found a way, because they cared enough to try. Vegans aren't saying that everyone in the world can be vegan right now. The problem is that too few even try when they have every opportunity to do so.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-26 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
because they cared enough to try

Wow, this is so off the charts passive aggressive. No I do not ~care enough to try~. I like meat. I am an omnivore. No one's out there trying to convert jaguars to veganism because ~if they just cared enough~.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-26 06:00 am (UTC)(link)
DA

Jaguars are obligate carnivores. With the exception of those with certain health problems, humans are not.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-26 10:21 am (UTC)(link)
Jaguars need to eat meat to survive, that's the difference. As you said yourself, you just "like" eating meat. Beings are dying because of your taste preferences. That's sad.

Yeah, fuck all those people with allergies who aren't trying hard enough to manage their allergies by going the easy way out instead of doing a more complicated plan of treatment!

Troll.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-26 12:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I’m not going to argue with someone who is purposely deprived of nutrients that regulate brain function. It’s cruel. It’s your choice to eat what you want. If you’re visiting this abuse on beings that depend on you not to fuck with their health out of misplaced morality, then that’s a matter for social services, but as long as you’re only destroying your own body then you do you.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-26 01:46 pm (UTC)(link)
How is it that the "lol vegans are dumb and protein deficient XD" comments don't get called trolls?
