The 70s are a wildly underrated decade, musically speaking

(the 80s are kind of the opposite imo but, you know, taste is taste0

I agree with you

Agreed

If we're talking decades in music the 70's are the fucking bomb. The decade that gave us"Ballroom Blitz," a lot of Billy Joel's work, Led Zepplin, Elton John, Queen, Stevie Wonder, Rumors by Fleetwood Mac, Electric Light Orchestra, Marvin Gaye, Simon and Garfunkle, Nina Simone, Earth Wind and Fire, Lou Reed, "Danny's Song." (And to clarify, I love plenty of newer music as well.)

I had a lot of high school teachers I really liked who were children or young adults in the 70's so they'd play the music on occasion and it was nice to hear about the associations they had with the music as they grew up.

I grew up in the 80s and I honestly agree a lot of the fashion, hairstyles, and music were pretty much crap.

Give me the '70s or the '90s.

Not by those of us who were there, matey.

How nice!

Aww, that's so sweet of you, OP, and you're probably listening to a lot of really cool music too!

(Anonymous) 2018-02-27 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
I've worked a few retail jobs where #1 classic rock hits of the 70s and 80's was the endlessly repeated store soundtrack and even though I do like and listen to music from that era, there are a lot of songs I can't stand to listen to anymore

Older people are often pleasantly surprised by my knowledge of their favourite music (I'm a music nerd raised by music nerds) but never for this reason!! I'm jealous of your positivity

Given what local and store radio is like in this country, I am baffled that someone could have missed seventies and eighties hits. I mean unless they're getting into really obscure corners of it, in which case well done, but.... really?

As a 50+ reader, I'm not sure whether I should be appalled you're calling me old or...laugh it off.

I think I'll laugh it off.

This is an awesome secret and you should be proud. :)

(Anonymous) 2018-02-27 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
A) that's super sweet as a motivation, and B) oh man I love that stuff so much. A lot of my favorite music comes out of the 70s and 80s, despite the fact that I wasn't really aware of pop music for the part of the 80s I was alive for.

That's cool.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-27 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
For the 70s, I'd recommend Three Dog Night, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bee Gees, Carole King, Alice Cooper, Michael Jackson (both 70s and 80s).
For the 80s, Journey, Phil Collins and Genesis, Sheena Easton, Peter Gabriel, Van Halen, Huey Lewis and the News, Janet Jackson.

Re: That's cool.

That's so sweet ! And this thread made me realised how much 70's music I was listening to (and loving).

(Anonymous) 2018-02-27 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
THIS SECRET IS LOVELY!!

(Anonymous) 2018-02-27 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I was born in '84, and I've encountered a few people who seem pleasantly surprised by my interest in music from before my time, too. I credit my parents with that, though-my dad worked in radio and LOVED reading up on and learning about music history and whatnot-I remember him having lots of rock and roll encyclopedias around the house, and I used to read those sometimes when I was younger. And he and my mom would play stuff from the '50s/'60s/'70s (and sometimes even earlier than that) around the house all the time when I was a kid.

So it never occurred to me that it was "unusual" to know so much about that sort of music. I like it when people are interested in the history of music, and can show interest in, or appreciation for, music from various eras. There's a lot of great classic music out there, and it's fun to see what people did with the technology of their time, and how creative and memorable they could be with the music they made. Hearing music from earlier decades gives me an even deeper appreciation for the more current music I enjoy as well, 'cause I can see the influences more clearly and whatnot.

Anywho, tl;dr, this secret is awesome and I'm glad you're discovering some good music and bonding with people over it like this :)!

This secret is so sweet it makes me want to hug my screen.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-27 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
Hot funk, cool punk, even if it's old junk it's still rock n roll to me.

+1 :)
