N!F1: It gets better with time. Don't waste energy on someone who treated you badly when you did nothing to deserve it.
N!S2: In the original French, even? Please. It's okay for there to be fandoms for different versions of things.
N!S1: You'll show them some day, when you do something amazing.
166. American voice actors almost never (except when they are really experienced actors, like in Mononoke-hime) get the attitude right to go with the Japanese body language the characters use. It's disorienting and annoying and I hate dubs. Also, with a dub you can't compare the translation to the dialogue and play the entertaining "what did they get wrong?" game, which is particularly fun when American companies age sexually active teenage female characters up to extremes that make their behaviour ridiculous. "I'm 18 and in college!" coming out of the mouth out of someone who actually said "I'm 16 and in high school!" and doesn't even act that mature? NEVER FAILS TO BRING THE LULZ.
140: You probably do a much better job of living by the actual wise things he said than he ever did. Congrats. (He still ignored a fucked up 11 year old kid and even gave him much of the freedom he asked for, just because he didn't ASK for help he didn't know he needed. If he'd done something about Tom when Tom was 11 the world would have been wholly different. And I loved the way he sat and watched Tom's shattered soul weeping. He would not have walked away from Omelas, your Dumbles.)
138. I liked Finding Neverland, I admit it. And I never saw Across the Universe. But the other two I thought were pretty lame. And I love Kate Winslet. Just not so much in Titanic.
134. ITAWTS. Like the fist of an angry god. Except I would rather have them all do that to me.
132. That episode was so ridiculous I couldn't even laugh at it. Towing the earth with a TARDIS? Growing back a whole Doctor from a missing bit? I'm so glad RTD is going away. As
131. ...I don't know what country you're from, but I fangirl stuff from everywhere. I love tons of stuff from Japan, Canada and the UK, plus Epitafios (Argentina), Charlie Jade (South Africa), Obernewtyn and the Chaser's War (Australia)...there are a lot of people out there who love to see great movies, reads and TV from all over the world. Promote it. There are lots of people who will love it. (PS: I really wish people wouldn't refer to every prejudice and bigotry in the world or even in fantasy worlds as "racism". Patriotism to the point of chauvinism is its own special kind of bad.)
127. I was not able to take it seriously after the end of the first movie when the code that took over the whole universe turned out to be...backwards katakana. Worse luck, the guy who took me to the movie was Japanese and he went off on a giant rant about Japan bashing and how the Japanese are always treated as evil in movie. I totally had to support him in that, because his feelings were completely understandable, but now that's all that I can remember about the movie! Also? Dark City and eXistenZ, which came out the same year, were a lot better. And had actors who can actually ACT. Jude Law & Rufus Sewell > > > Keanu Reeves (very pretty, but like an overbred toy dog, not much more you can say for him)
126. I think that's why everyone likes him so much. Except me. (I love Eccleston and McGann.) He's so twitchy. He's pretty, but the first time I saw him as the Doctor, all that twitchiness caused me to spontaneously say, "WTF, do you still think you're Barty Crouch Jr?"
121. ...What is that from? He's already famous anyway. To me he'll always be Cedric Diggory!
116. If this is a pattern then you're a bad friend, but sometimes we all need to chill out and take a break from being social; if you know they won't understand...what can you do?
114. I actually hate all the spinoff comms because FS is enough of a timewaster, thanks. It'll settle down once we're all over the sheer WTFery of the finale.
108. That'd be hot all right.

(Anonymous) 2008-07-13 12:37 am (UTC)(link)The whole time I was catching up on seasons 1 and 2, I'd see people go on and on about Tennant and how hot he is, so when he came around I was already doubting him. I don't like conventional hot celebrities (ie Brad Pitt). I don't think Tennant is hot either. And I'm not saying his acting is bad but he overdoes it a lot. Too much.
Re: 126
Tennat is pretty but twitchy; I don't find him hot.

Their voices don't match body language? Are you Japanese and know it all? English voices are given scripts telling them what kind of voice to use, and it usually matches up with the mood of the character's voice in Japanese.
Also, Haruhi needs an androgynous voice, I doubt she's getting it in the dub, since Mona Marshall is queen when it comes to androgynous voices.
Re: 166
I actually used to wonder why the body language/voice matchups bothered me so much, and then a guy I was dating, who was born in Nagoya, and did not speak English until he came here in his twenties, pointed out to me the mismatch between the body language and the tone of voice/attitudes the drawn character and English language voice actor were using, which he said in several instances was so bad it gave him a headache. Hiroshi was not particularly into anime though. He used to think it was cute and amusing that I watched TV shows like that--he preferred American TV and music.
Frequently translations are "localised" and they are quite often "cleaned up", particularly in shows intended for children. Or they decide to translate the "sense" of something rather than literally what was said, which can sometimes be a good choice if it's an idiom that wouldn't make sense outside of the culture, but is sometimes just laughable. Then there was the print translation of Sailor Moon in the late 90s that translated what was rather clear and elegant Japanese language (that series was the first thing I ever read in Japanese, because I liked it long before it was ever translated and followed along in Nakayoshi magazine from 1993-1995, with a dictionary in one hand and the comic in the other) into rap-speak.
I don't like dubs. I've never seen Ouran, and wasn't speaking about it specifically. I haven't really been into anime for a while. I got sucked into HP fandom and ended up going from that into SPN and Heroes. I keep meaning to check it out again, but I actually got my start with it as a Captain Harlock fan in about 1980 or so...
Re: 166
Yes, in shows for children, dialogue is cleaned up... especially anime from the early to mid-90's or anything by 4Kids. But that was then and this is now. Naruto is pretty much unedited except for sprays of blood.
You have no reason to dislike dubs... afterall, squeaky voices aren't easy on the ears and even the Japanese fans end up liking the dub instead of the original Japanese version, plus, voice acting for anime has improved tremendously.
Re: 166
I have lots of reasons, you just don't think they're good enough. Whatever.
More importantly, why should I BOTHER with dubs? I don't exactly need them.
I don't know what squeaky voices you're talking about, but I find Japanese voices speaking Japanese to be perfectly pleasant, except for a few that probably wouldn't sound pleasant no matter what they were speaking.
Re: 166
Whatever.

Re: 166
ETA: Yeah. I saw the Vampire Hunter D dub in the late 90s when I was running an anime room at Dundracon and we couldn't get a sub.
Wait, no, I did watch an episode of Puffy AmiYumi late one night when we were all pretty drunk.
But as a general rule I've been subs or raw Japanese only since the mid-90s.
Someone got ticked at me once because I didn't recognise the names they were using for the Sailor Senshi in a fic and they thought I was putting them on but I'd never actually seen the dub past the first couple of episodes.
I'm glad they made the Sailor Moon dub because it got a lot of women and girls into fandom. But it still sucked. I think of dubs as a gateway drug and I don't complain about them but I certainly don't purchase them.
Re: 166
Not that you don't have a right to not like dubs, but...just saying. You can't use an argument against today's dubs by taking assumptions from how things were ten years ago.
EDIT: Oh man, dude, no, Puffy AmiYumi was an American show, first of all, and Sailor Moon is...dude, no, I wouldn't watch that show in the dub nowadays. Except for the occasional comedy that plays around with the jokes for an american audiences--and 4Kids, who's getting out of the anime business--DVDs of the dubs are almost all entirely uncut. They very very rarely change the names--the only example I can think of recently was a character's name being translated (Ahiru to Duck) because the name was meant to represent names of animals like in old fairytales, and a lot of puns wouldn't make any sense without the name change. All the other names in the show remained the same, too, and when the character's original name came up on screen, it was untouched with a subtitle adding a note that Ahiru meant Duck on the screen. Other than that, the only ones that do that any more are kid's dubs.
Re: 166
I don't need to watch dubs, so I generally don't.
Re: 166
Of course you don't need to watch it, but if you use those arguments as to why, people aren't going to take you seriously because it comes across as someone who is uneducated about today's market. Feel free to dislike dubs. I'm not going to tell you that you have to watch them--heck, most of my friends are still sub fans. Just know that it's not the 1990's anymore.
