What about those of us who don’t loathe it and aren’t calling for boycotts or the director’s head on a pike, but didn’t much enjoy the film?

I didn’t hate it. There were bits I liked. I hated Kylo Ren. I liked Rose. There were bits I thought were funny, and bits that made me sad. I felt like sometimes I could see the characters being puppeted around for plot reasons that didn’t make much sense except that without them the plot wouldn’t go the same way. I might or might not see the next in the trilogy, but TLJ didn’t ruin Star Wars for me forever. Does my criticism pass muster, or is it baseless whiny bullshit because it’s not a relentless torrent of praise?

thats chill

This was a good post, up to the last sentence that jumps off the rails, sideswipes nineteen neat parked cars, clipped off thirteen telephone poles, hit two houses, and bruised eight trees, to reveal that yes, you are bananas, you're very bananas today.

AYRT—I was trying to match the tone of OP’s assertion that the vast majority of TLJ was baseless whiny bullshit. I have seen criticism of the film that’s blatantly about ships or favorite characters not getting enough or the right focus, or about SJWs ruining everything. But I’ve also seen praise of the film that dismisses criticism as bullshit and claims that the film is an objective masterpiece, but doesn’t have any more weight behind it than the criticism—it’s enough that their faves get focused on or their ship shares lots of screentime. Those aren’t bad reasons to like any film, but forgive me if I’d like to be able to dislike something without being accused of bullshitting.

Does anyone who matters really care if you like or dislike a movie?

(Anonymous) 2018-02-28 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
Your double standards are amazing. You think the assertion that 95% of complaints are just whiny pissbabies completely valid but someone tries to use the same language in reply and they're clearly a crazy dumbass.
Real subtle.

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2018-02-28 12:16 pm (UTC)(link)
As I clearly said, I agreed with the post up to the point where it went off the rails like a runaway truck of 30,000 bananas. You might be a whiny pissbaby if you see two sides and take offense to that cultural allusion.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-28 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
95% of complaints, not 'of people who didn't like it'

presumably if you didn't loathe it and just didn't have fun with it, you are a very small percentage of the angry-words-on-the-internet-about-TLJ

I don't think everyone should love it, taste exists, but the conversation is very much not dominated by people saying "it had cool parts but didn't work for me."

it's dominated by people saying "it's OBJECTIVELY BAD WRITING because I was SURPRISED and therefore the director MUST be doing smug gotchas" or "star wars isn't supposed to be BLEAK AND CYNICAL" even though that's not how it ends (not even touching the crazy meninists and tumblrinas on either side)

anyway you're fine but if you're this bitter maybe you loathe the movie more than you claim

or maybe you're just sick of the wank, which, fair

This.

Something can be objectively bad writing and a plot hole. Just because you are dumb enough to find a contrived "twist" that's just there for shock value omg such great writing, much clever! doesn't mean everyone has to she your thoughts.

Something can be objectively bad writing

How?

Just because you are dumb enough to find a contrived "twist" that's just there for shock value omg such great writing, much clever! doesn't mean everyone has to she your thoughts.

This is an assholish way to argue.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-28 07:29 am (UTC)(link)
If a plot is too contrived, the way characters act make no sense, that's bad writing.

And it's also an assholish way to argue that people who dislike certain things are just too dumb to "get it" or know why the director did it, yet that's exactly what you did and what plenty of fans of the movie are doing.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-28 07:36 am (UTC)(link)
If a plot is too contrived, the way characters act make no sense, that's bad writing.

How do you tell when a plot is objectively contrived, or the way that characters act is objectively nonsensical?

And it's also an assholish way to argue that people who dislike certain things are just too dumb to "get it" or know why the director did it, yet that's exactly what you did and what plenty of fans of the movie are doing.

I... hadn't previously posted in this subthread, so I'm really not sure where you're getting the idea that I personally did that.

And I think "the movie is objectively bad and you are dumb if you like it" is exponentially more assholish than any post disagreeing with you in this thread, and also more assholish than the original secret. I mean, that's just an extraordinarily strong and assholish take.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-28 07:47 am (UTC)(link)
If things happen in a movie just to move it along and not because it made sense (like why the codebreaker was in jail when Finn and Rose arrived even though he could have left any time) or characters suddenly have romance plots without any real build-up just to pair the spares ( like with Rose and Finn).

And sorry, I was assuming you where Airt. Who actually did what I said yet I don't see you taking an issue with that. And I don't have a lot of posts in this thread. Not to mention there are quite a few assholish replies from the movie fans ITT but you conveniently ignore those - which isn't even a little surprising.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-28 08:11 am (UTC)(link)
And sorry, I was assuming you where Airt. Who actually did what I said

I don't think this is close to being true. AYRT did not say that everyone who dislikes the movie is dumb or that it was objectively good, which would be the equivalent of what you said in your reply to them. They were criticizing specific things that people say about the movie, not people who dislike the movie point blank, and I thought they did a pretty fair job of maintaining that distinction.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-28 09:39 am (UTC)(link)
"It's dominated by people saying "it's OBJECTIVELY BAD WRITING because I was SURPRISED and therefore the director MUST be doing smug gotchas" " is exactly the same as saying "Most people are just too dumb to GET it" and is immensely condescending.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-28 04:10 pm (UTC)(link)
It is not at all the same.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-01 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
NAYRT
Ummm...yeah. It is.

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2018-02-28 12:26 pm (UTC)(link)
You might be a whiny pissbaby if you think this discussion is polarized into two sides and are keeping score.

It's a movie, no one of importance really cares if you dislike it.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-28 03:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you even read the bullshit you write before posting or...?
Try a little harder putting words in my mouth that I never said.

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2018-02-28 03:19 pm (UTC)(link)
"Not to mention there are quite a few assholish replies from the movie fans ITT but you conveniently ignore those - which isn't even a little surprising."

That's keeping score. (Particularly ridiculous when you don't even know who you're responding to, or what their opinion on the movie is.)

(Anonymous) 2018-02-28 03:26 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not "keeping score" it's disagreeing with someone who said "nobody of the other side here was posting assholish comments" which simply isn't true.
It's ridiculous that you accuse me of the exact same thing you do yourself. Get your head out of your own ass and practise what you preach, how about it?

(Anonymous) 2018-02-28 03:36 pm (UTC)(link)
And I'm out. This is too ridiculous.

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2018-02-28 03:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Let's be clear about this, you're trying to play gotcha on the fact that an unidentified and anonymous person has not equally addressed unspecified, uncited, unquoted, and unlinked "assholish" comments by unidentified and anonymous persons who, nevertheless are on the "other side." This is a classic tu quoque, made even more ridiculous by the fact that none of the parties or posts in question have been identified beyond mere innuendo.

It's not the same thing at all to point out that your stated argument is bullshit.

I never said that. I said that your comment was much more assholish. That none of the comments were as assholish as your comment. Because you said that the movie was objectively bad and that you have to be dumb to think that it was good.
