Hear! Hear!

I was almost afraid to see it. But it's great, it's not SJWy like some people were complaining.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-27 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh, really? What would make it "SJWy" to you?

Yeah, it's way off base for audiences to want a well crafted movie with rich characters and good pacing. It's much better that instead of all that rubbish we got SuperLeia, Ben Swolo, Rose and Canto Bight!

How does having muscles or being a Jedi make someone a bad character

I personally think it was "a well-crafted movie with rich characters and good pacing." Different strokes.

If they're going to a Star Wars movie, it certainly is.

Star Wars is fun. Star Wars has never been well-crafted, filled with rich characters, or particularly well-paced. If you think otherwise, you should probably unbolt your nostalgia goggles from your skull before you go to the next movie. You might enjoy it more.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-28 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
95% seems high but I think it's very dependent on where you having conversations about the film. I avoid the avid sequel trilogy fans so the most fan-related negativity I come across is for Luke, but most of the criticism that I see overall falls more into bad writing (i.e. the Holdo/Poe idiot ball debate).

I do think most people do understand what the movie was trying to do. It's just that it didn't work for some people, which is okay. You can understand it and still not like it.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-28 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know what your particular criticisms of the Holdo/Poe storyline are, but most of what I've seen is "but WHYYYYYY didn't she just TRUST him" like the entire opening sequence of the movie didn't pointedly establish her reasons for not trusting him

paced a little weird, maybe one twist too many? sure. but the actual complaints dominating the conversation all sound like they're coming from people who watched into the movie ten minutes late

Eh, I'd put it more at 50%.

It wasn't a great film. I understand why big fans are upset.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-28 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
It's probably more around ~30 % and the rest is you and people like you dismissing actual criticism as whiny bullshit because you're too invested in the movie to accept any opinions different from yours.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-28 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
I've listened to the criticisms. I don't agree with most of them, at all, and I think OP is right on in saying that most of the criticism is founded on people's fandom opinions and expectations more than on the movie itself. I would probably say closer to 80% than 95%, because the movie does have flaws - mostly around pacing and plotting and the Canto Bight storyline - but that's not really what people seem to want to talk about most.

Makes it so much harder for me to criticize that 5% because I'm too busy shooting down dumbasses crying about the 95%.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-28 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
I’ve honestly seen way more love for the movie than I have criticism...

(Anonymous) 2018-02-28 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with all of this, OP.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-28 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
What about those of us who don’t loathe it and aren’t calling for boycotts or the director’s head on a pike, but didn’t much enjoy the film?

I didn’t hate it. There were bits I liked. I hated Kylo Ren. I liked Rose. There were bits I thought were funny, and bits that made me sad. I felt like sometimes I could see the characters being puppeted around for plot reasons that didn’t make much sense except that without them the plot wouldn’t go the same way. I might or might not see the next in the trilogy, but TLJ didn’t ruin Star Wars for me forever. Does my criticism pass muster, or is it baseless whiny bullshit because it’s not a relentless torrent of praise?

(Anonymous) 2018-02-28 02:30 am (UTC)(link)

This was a good post, up to the last sentence that jumps off the rails, sideswipes nineteen neat parked cars, clipped off thirteen telephone poles, hit two houses, and bruised eight trees, to reveal that yes, you are bananas, you're very bananas today.

95% of complaints, not 'of people who didn't like it'

presumably if you didn't loathe it and just didn't have fun with it, you are a very small percentage of the angry-words-on-the-internet-about-TLJ

I don't think everyone should love it, taste exists, but the conversation is very much not dominated by people saying "it had cool parts but didn't work for me."

it's dominated by people saying "it's OBJECTIVELY BAD WRITING because I was SURPRISED and therefore the director MUST be doing smug gotchas" or "star wars isn't supposed to be BLEAK AND CYNICAL" even though that's not how it ends (not even touching the crazy meninists and tumblrinas on either side)

anyway you're fine but if you're this bitter maybe you loathe the movie more than you claim

or maybe you're just sick of the wank, which, fair

Except it objectively sucked...

(Anonymous) 2018-02-28 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
The writing was pretty awful, with that pointless casino subplot. And who cares about the sacrifice of a random, unknown character. Make it interesting and inpactful. That should've been Leia on the ship.

Oh, and there's no such thing as out of range in space. Out of effective range, sure, distance can make aiming harder, but a blaster bolt or a solid projectile will continue until it hits something.

As for not being able to catch up to the fleeing ship? Yeah, it was smaller, so could have more acceleration, but other than the speed of light, there is no speed limit in space, short of the amount of fuel you're willing to expend to make something move faster. And once you're at that speed, you can cut off the engines and coast at that speed. Until you hit something.

Why aren't lightspeed missiles/torpedos a thing? Just a solid chunk of matter with the right engine on it could take out just about anything.

Agreed. I've only seen it once so far but I did enjoy it. I get why people might be disappointed if they expected something new & shiny, but after TFA, I kinda just expected 8 & 9 to be loose 5 & 6 reboots anyway, so *shrugs*

I thought it was a aesthetically pleasing movie & I like the characters.
