Dumbest thing you've personally witnessed in fandom

(Anonymous) 2018-03-02 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I once knew this girl who sent links of her (crappy) fanfiction and some of the fandom's best known works to the creators to show them "how a sequel should be done". She was in her early 20s and dumb as a bag of hammers because she genuinely thought this was a good idea and then got mad at people who told her it wasn't and ffs was she trying to get people's fics taken down with a cease and desist? This was in the old days when fanfiction wasn't even close to being mainstream, like...much more underground than it is even now.

Someone had to explain to her what copyright law meant and how fanfiction was technically a violation of it. She threw a glorious tantrum, accused everyone of being mean to her and went on a big lj unfriending spree.

Legend says she's still trying to finish her 60+ chapter fic, lol.

People sending fics/art/shipping things to creators/actors/writers/whatever. Just, no. Dumb and awful.

She was so embarrassingly naive about it and sincerely believed they'd be interested in reading a bunch of shippy fanfic because hey, they created the canon! The amount of butthurt when she realized that people thought she was a dimwit was epic.

Sounds ridiculous. I think the people who send it to the actual canon creators are even more ridiculous, though. People who send NSFW art, for example, to the Supernatural actors of their character. WTF?

I can get GEN fanart, like single characters or maybe very PG ship-art for a canon couple, because that isn't so bad.

But straight-up porn is a huge ball of 'what the fuck are you thinking??' because even if the actors/creators in question are okay with some fanart, you still don't send them that. Yes, yes the internet is for porn, but maybe don't @ the person playing the character you love with a picture of their face doing something nsfw. Just maybe.

I can get behind people showing actors/writers awesome gen art of their characters/stories. I've seen creators get really excited about fanart. If I were a good artist, I might try to show a writer my depiction of a kickass battle scene from their book, or a character study piece based on description given in the writing, but I wouldn't show them weird shippy stuff (I think the main canon couple doing some G-rated kissing would be fair game) or kink art or most kinds of AU, even tame stuff like modern/high school or rule 63.

The time the Yuri!!! on Ice fandom had a collective meltdown about someone statesides producing a made-for-tv film about a figure skater getting together with her coach.

Like, I've heard of way worse stuff, but this one made it to my dash.

Lol I remember that. There was a petition and everything and it was just bananas.

While the fandom gloriously overreacted, it was kind of weird timing to have an identical plot of a 'too old' skater getting a second chance because someone wants to coach her and then they fall in love.

Not really? Similar stories being produced close together is pretty normal, even just from coincidence.

RPF shippers trash talking an actor’s wife and asking when he was gonna leave “the dragon” and be with his costar, who is, like him, also married with kids. Congratulating said costar on the birth of her new baby with “oh, she has (your costar’s) nose, how cute.” Spreading rumors about their sleeping together at SDCC. The usual RPF tinhatter starter pack, but in het flavor, basically.

Is this Supernatural? 'Cause it sounds like Supernatural.

AYRT—Nope, het pairing. I ship their characters, but the RPF side used to make enough waves that they showed up in the fictional ship tags, too. Also some anon broke the news that the actor wouldn’t be coming to SDCC one year partially because of the gossip, and no one believed them because the official announcements said he’d be there... and he didn’t show. The tinhatters seem to have calmed down lately; makes me wonder how many moved on to a different RPF ship.

Oh god RPF tinhatters are... next level delusional tbh. It's one thing if they keep it to themselves, but the ones that harass the SO's of their fave actors are way, way out of line.

Also boggling because the last thing you'd do to get in someone's good graces is harass and insult their romantic partner(or family).

AYRT—this isn’t so much dumb as fucking terrifying, but apparently the actor whose RPF-shipping fans hate his wife got long rambling letters about how the writer was protecting him from overzealous fans— on hotel stationary, all from places he’d stayed, with dates corresponding to when he’d been staying there. Honestly if it’d been me who got something like that, I’d have quit acting, packed up my family, and moved to the middle of nowhere with no forwarding address and a crocodile-infested moat surrounding an electrified fence.

Hmm...either the idiots who thought it'd be cute to send actors the slash fic they'd written, or the very public meltdown a BNF had over being denied access to a taping of a show because the audience was at capacity (it actually wound up on Gawker, it was fucking cringe-inducing).

Do you have a link to the Gawker story? This sounds hilarious.

The person who wrote a dramatic letter to J K Rowling about how betrayed she felt that Hermione and Draco did not get together.

I was in a fandom where the original media got a "sequel" of sorts in the form of a graphic novel. There were mixed reactions from fandom, both for the quality of the artwork and the plot. The reaction went from wildly enthusiastic to disappointed, to resignation where most people wanted to support the continuation out of loyalty anyway. A few people genuinely liked it.

And then there was one woman who was way old enough to know better who wrote out a public letter of protest to the guy who'd created the original media, but had no part in illustrating or writing the graphic novel, dressing him down like she was his mother and he'd just shat the bed. You know, the "how dare you do this to meeeee/I'm so disappointed in you/ you can do better" talk. It was so cringey I can't even think back on it now without more cringe.

That woman sounds like she read/watched 'Misery' and completely missed the point of the story.

You mean, other than f!s on any Thursday? ;)

I think the dumbest I've seen this week was "anti-SJWs" trying to start wank over A Wrinkle in Time, and no one showed up.
