Online feminism in a nutshell.

NO. Try hanging around some genuine feminist sites and not bloody tumblr or twitter.

"No true Scotsman!", she cried. "No true Scotsman!"

I liked Allison Janney's reply when asked about it.

"I would never judge anyone's choice of clothing. She looked absolutely beautiful and I'm so happy for them that she's pregnant again. She's an extraordinary woman. And she can wear whatever she wants."

That's a great, classy answer.

+1

that's a great one -- both the answer and allison janney.

Agreed. Well said.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-03 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
It's also ridiculous because a) royal protocol prohibits political statements so they basically demand her to break protocol and b) this kind of groupthink has turned into yet another way to harrass women who don't fall in line - but somehow when it comes from their own ranks, it's okay.

*squints*

It looks like she is wearing black... or us that very dark green?

(Anonymous) 2018-03-03 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, it's dark green. But it's so obviously muted and the closest to black she can get away with in her position that the people whining about it are just making themselves look like idiots.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-03 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, the whole wearing black thing is pretty meaningless slacktivism to start with anyway, so yeah, I can't really get mad at her.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-03 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
This.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-03 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's just empty posturing.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-03 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
I think red carpet outfits as activism is demeaning, but it was a thing regardless, and choosing not to participate in the thing makes a statement.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-03 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
It would, but that's not what happened. She isn't allowed to participate. She chose to wear a dress in a very dark, muted colour that looks very close to black, and that's the absolute furthest she can go.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-03 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
Non-brits do not get it. She bloody can't. Being royal in Britain means not being political.
She can and does lend public support to women-focussed charities, but she can't take a public position on this.

I'm American, and I get it because I've watched a few documentaries about the Royal Family and how they handle themselves like an extremely conservative company. We don't really have anything like that in the U.S. except the presidential office or the First Lady... kind of. Or at least, we did before Trump was elected. You couldn't just say whatever you want or do whatever you want because the whole world is watching and it wasn't just you doing things, it's the office and the institution you represent. Even the most innocuous thing can yield unexpected blowback.

Most people don't think about that or realize it, though. They take freedom of expression very much for granted because they're private individuals, and yes, because we're American and it's something we expect to have.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-06 07:36 am (UTC)(link)
They said "non-Brits" not specifically Americans.

(I swear, on some parts of the internet, you'd think the only two nationalities were British and American)

And the dress is so close to black it's really obvious that she's aligning herself with it as closely as she can while still having something that passes for plausible deniability.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-03 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure if that's charcoal or super-dark olive, but it's practically a shade of black if black had shades.

It's a rational choice in the Duchess's position. Wearing jet black could be seen as joining in a political movement; while I think it'd be excusable in this case, maybe it is too fraught for the Windsors to stoop from their position in that way. Wearing something like bright yellow would be making a counter-statement and perhaps more untoward. Wearing something almost black is perhaps a way to respect the movement while being appropriately regal and "not joining in."

(As someone who literally forgot to wear black to my grandmother's funeral--I was in a bit of a daze--I can't let myself care that much.)

(Anonymous) 2018-03-03 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
She wasn't allowed to wear black. Something to do with Royal Protocol. She got as close as she could get without breaking the rules.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-03 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
I remember seeing something about Diana and there was this time where she wore a black dress to an event shortly before marrying Charles and he said "Our family doesn't wear black except to funerals" and she said "Well, I'm not part of your family yet." (Sounds like a rule that doesn't extend to men's tuxedos.)
