I'm not sure what people would want out of raceplay tbh. Maybe in-story drama about prejudiced family members not accepting the main character's relationships? That's the only sort of race-affecting relationship I can think of, but it's not really kinky at all.

I'd imagine raceplay isn't that much of a thing because people already know that people of all races are really just the same basic person when it comes down to it, so it's not exciting. Unless there's some degree of exoticizing/otherizing people of different races going on, which most normal people don't do because that obviously that shit is racist, there's pretty much no kink potential in itself.

Is OP talking about characters from differing countries/cultures getting together (which I could see some fluff opportunities as characters understand each other's perspectives), or just plain race alone?

And if people *did* write that, how many others in fandom would start pearl-clutching over racism and exoticizing the character? So pretty much nobody is going to do that.

What I got from is is that BBC is common enough in mainstream porn so OP's wants to know why it's essentially absent in fandom.

And let's be honest: the fact that BBC is that common in mainstream porn is (partly) a result of racism.

oh! no, fandom is racist. i wasn't offering that as an explanation for why fandom doesn't have BBC. i was just saying - if BBC became popular in fandom, it wouldn't entirely be pearl-clutching for people to point out the racist dynamics.

i mean, it's a kind of complicated relationship between race and porn, and the idea would inevitably be addressed with all the subtlety and attention to nuance of a flamethrower if/when people brought it up, but the underlying point isn't entirely out there.

Yet people will write fics containing abuse, fetishized sexism etc despite writers/consumers of such fics increasingly being dogpiled and called increasingly horrible things.

Because some of the abuse is written as a way to deal with trauma, and no one is out in the real world fetishizing abuse victims. Actual black men, for instance, still have to face the BBC thing in the real world.

So - a little different.

So you think the difference is that people can more easily shrug off being dogpiled for fetishizing abuse/sexism/whatever because they know they aren't actually sexist abuse fetishists, whereas people would feel bad about being called a racist for writing race fetish fic because they know their fetish makes them racist?

I work in social services and...NO. They really, really are.

This, and I say it as a fanwriter.

I can get away with exoticising one half of a couple if and only if that half is tied to a fantasy construct (vampires, werewolves, etc). The moment I try doing it with an actual human for the sake of kink, here come the death threats! Because I'm a terrible, horrible white (as far as anyone can tell just by my skin color) person. Even though that's the only square on the non-minority bingo card I hit.

So the actual race kink stays in a drawer until/unless I sanitize it into what doesn't draw the ire of a million screaming fools.

The main difference is like the difference between RPF and regular fanfic: portrayals of real people. People don't mind whatever ruleset you ascribe to a werewolf or vampire, because hey it's fiction and might be relevant to the story. But saying that people IRL behave according to some made up ruleset like fictional beings is just demeaning.

I have a black gay friend who confided that one of his kinks is to be mistreated racially by a white guy. It's similar to non-con in that it's not something anyone would want to happen realistically, it's a fetish for entering a certain headspace (in this case, as a submissive). Of course, even a black person writing something like that would be doxxed and called out to oblivion, so it's no surprise that it's never the subject of fic.
