Agreed. I don't care about shipping. She's the author, she can write what ships she wants. But the epilogue is both badly written and a bad ending.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-03 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that's true, but I also think that shipping is the main reason why people are invested in its being bad, instead of just thinking that it is bad.

There are worse endings than "They all had babies and lived happily ever after." It's not that creative, but it's definitely not shocking in any sense. But it's written in the most trite and smarmy way it could have been.

I dunno. The writing quality of the last two books is debatable but I bloody loved the Dumbledore and Snape stuff.

As much as it hurts my heart that Sirius' death falls into that, yeah, I agree with your icon.

Eh. It's clumsily written but not worth holding a grudge over IMO

(Anonymous) 2018-03-03 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
The extended universe is just plain shite though.

Hah. I never even read the final book because I apparently hated Ron/Hermione more than I cared about anything in the story (I wasn't in the fandom, so I can't even say it was a ship grudge as much as annoyance at how she portrayed their relationship).

Let us all appreciate the irony in how I love The Cursed Child in ways I never did the novels.

You know people who liked the epilogue? Amazing. I've personally never met one.

I'm not in love with it, but it doesn't bother me, either. Same with Cursed Child. I do love Fantastic Beasts because it feels like a totally separate thing, and it feels more grown up than HP.

Yup. Bad, bad ending. But, then, I shipped older-Harry/Snape and then Harry/Draco, so all the happy-babies stuff (named after every dead person ever), just got on my nerves.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-04 01:53 pm (UTC)(link)
You did realize that those ships weren't going to happen, though, right?

Not sarcasm, I can see why you didn't like the ending, but it isn't fair to rate the ending based on that.

So some people actually LIKE the epilogue? I've never heard anyone, online or irl, say they liked it.

I get wanting to tie up as many "loose ends" as you can, but I prefer not to see everything tied up -- that's what fanfiction is for! I haven't read much HP fic but I hope a lot of people choose to ignore that epilogue and do what they want, if they're writing post-Hogwarts stuff. Even if they have to slap an AU label on it. It's just so unrealistic that everyone happens to end up with their classmates, like no one ever met and fancied a new person in all those years? All of them are still happy together a couple decades later?

(Anonymous) 2018-03-04 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
Alright--I liked it. If I was reading it for the first time now, as an adult, I'd probably think it was too neat or whatever, but I personally liked knowing that everyone was happy and had families. As an anon above pointed out, though, those of us who liked it aren't as passionate about liking it as those who hated it, so nobody hears that side *shrug*.

I liked the epilogue. It may be partly due to the fact that I like Harry/Ginny. But, overall, I liked it. Harry deserved a happy ending.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-04 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
I wasn't interested in The Cursed Child, then a friend offered me a ticket so I went. OMG. One of the most amazing visual productions I've seen, it's like everything you want to see and then some...and the plot was fine.

At the end of part 1, a character entered and I've never been in a theatre where 1400 people had exactly the same reaction to a character.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-04 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
The ending felt trite, and the book could very well have done without it. Somehow I don't totally hate it, though, even if pair the spares generally irritates me. At least it's at the very end where it can stand alone, away from everything else.

Still, I'm glad J.K. Rowling included it. It feels like she needed Harry's story to end just like that, and honestly, I don't see why not? It's her book. Fuck it. And Harry could use a break from doom and gloom around every corner.

Also, I do have kidfic ideas from time to time. I'll probably never write them, though, lol.

Is this 1984?

(Anonymous) 2018-03-04 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
I only know the vaguest things about Harry Potter, but why does everyone look like they've been transplanted into Orwell's 1984?

There's a lot of make-up going on there - it's supposed to be 19 years later, though, to me, it looks like they went a bit too far for some of them.

Yeah, never going to like the epilogue no matter how much time passes.
I didn't much like HBP and DH, but 'canon' ends at the last chapter - EWE all the way!

I haven't seen this movie, and I don't have any ships in this sea battle, so I'm just impressed at how convincingly they aged the cast for that shot. Good job, makeup team!

Albus Severus Potter: "Dad! All the other kids keep making fun of my terrible, terrible name! How could you do this to me?"

Harry Potter: "I went through school with a name that sounds like an insult thought up by first years, and you want to complain about names to me?"

Albus Severus: "Daaaad!"

Harry: "Look, don't blame me. I wanted to name you after Colin Creevey and Dobby, but your mother said it wasn't dignified. Now, come meet your new sister Nymphadora Hedwig."
