IMO sexualizing kids would generally be a bad thing regardless of what was in the original source material.

I have no idea whether that's happening in the fandom - I'm not familiar with the fandom, and if it only involves aging characters up, that's a different thing. But what I am saying is that I don't think OP's logic holds universally true, you know? There are still things that would be objectionable regardless of how mature or R-rated South Park is (and also, no matter how annoyed you are at Tumblr).

(Anonymous) 2018-03-09 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
oh nah, the crazies in SP fandom are definitely mad at even the aging up. Because they are KIDS in canon, so to even age them up means you were thinking about children sexually to begin with, which makes you a PEDO!!!

The morality police in SP fandom are ferocious and fucking *crazy*.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-10 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
My brain does not wish to comprehend the notion that there are people morality policing South Park. I mean... It's fucking South Park. Have they even seen the show?

(Anonymous) 2018-03-10 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
I had the same question too. I mean... I'm pretty sure there is an episode titled Cartman gets an anal probe and another one where hee tries to put his dick into Butters' mouth?!

I've been in the SP fandom since about 2014 and I can't wrap my head around that either.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-10 09:22 am (UTC)(link)
By this logic, wouldn't sexualizing adult human beings also count as pedophilia since we were all children at some point? Would wanting to fuck your best friend that you grew up with (when you're both adults) count as pedophilia since you knew them as a kid?

(Anonymous) 2018-03-10 03:55 pm (UTC)(link)
According to Tumblr, all sex involving a person who was ever a child is pedophilia. And all sex is also rape by deception because you can never truly know another person.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-10 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
But... it's South Park. Anything that could be found objectionable about it has already happened in canon. If you're against mature content involving kids, complain to Troy Parker and Matt Stone before you start on the fandom.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-10 07:23 am (UTC)(link)
Kids wind up in sexual situations all the time in South Park. Have the morality police forgotten about the episode where Ike has an affair with his kindergarten teacher, or the episode where Butters becomes a pimp, or the episode where Jimmy sleeps with a prostitute to get rid of his erection on time for the talent show, or the episode where Cartman drugs Butters to take pictures of him in compromising poses, or the episode where Kyle becomes part of a human centipede, or the episode where Paris Hilton sells lingerie to nine-year-olds, or any of the episodes involving the Raisins girls? It's pretty silly to attack fanwriters for writing stories that aren't even a tenth as inappropriate as an average episode of that show.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-10 08:52 am (UTC)(link)
Having characters in sexual situations still isn't quite the same as sexualizing them, in the sense of portraying them as objects of sexual desire.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-10 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
There are morality police in South Park fandom? South Park? I mean... are they lost or something?

(Anonymous) 2018-03-10 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
This. I don't think I've watched more than 3 or 4 episodes (if that) and this seems so ridiculous to me.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-10 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this is pretty ridiculous.

Yes. Lost, or looking for trouble. Either way, they aren't watching the same show that I am. That much is obvious.

Hold up. Persona 5 fandom has wank comparable to Voltron fandom?

(Anonymous) 2018-03-10 05:28 am (UTC)(link)
Apparently yes. The P5 fandom has a special hateboner for Akechi Goro and some of the crazies would go and physically harm and harrass fans who like or cosplay him. I'm not sure about its state right now, but it used to be a toxic hellscape in its heydays.

Just a piece of this cake:

Well, Akechi is worst Persona boy.

Thanks for posting this, OP. South Park's the main fandom I write for at the moment.

I've never had any trouble with the purity brigade on AO3. *knock on wood* Even on tumblr most people were chill, although it's been years since I've been on tumblr, so I don't know if that's changed.

But yeah. I think the worst I've seen was on facebook pages and youtube comments. The people who like to screech "they're TEN. How DARE you ship _____! They're too young." It's like:

1) Shipping doesn't automatically mean porn. If you think it does then that's YOUR problem.
2) Kids grow up! There's no great stretch of the imagination involved in that.
3) It's an adult show. It was created by adults, for adults. It stands to reason that adults would be the ones doing fic/art/etc. for it.

I can't say much about tumblr as I don't really follow new folks anymore and with SP I keep myself close to the K2 side of the fandom. But the twitter side often tries to generate wank, mostly using this excuse to start pouting nonsense. I sometimes get the feeling they are only in for the fics and art and forget about the source material thinking this is all something like Steven Universe or My little Pony. While, for example in my country the episodes air around midnight, 1am for a reason.

There is so many "problematic" shit in the show AND in the games you have to wear a blindfold to miss all of that and shriek at other fans for shipping characters. Like mothers who preach about the innocence of children and how video games ruin them but go and buy GTA for their kid because it has cars on the cover.

If the fandom portrayed adults taking advantage of the characters, then yes, THAT would be problematic. But that is something neither the show nor the fancreators support.

(And have they seen some of the creek art you can collect in the game?!)

Right? Hell, part of what drew me into the South Park fandom was seeking refuge. Shit, I don't even write smut all that much, but I still can't take all the purity nonsense in popular anime fandoms and a lot of other cartoon fandoms anymore. i.e. I couldn't NOPE harder at the Voltron fandom if I tried right now. All the fucking "discourse" over "problematic" material is enough to make me want to bash my head in with a brick anymore. Like, maybe SP fandom had (has?) its ship wank and issues, but it totally pales in comparison to what I'm used to, and thank fuck for that.

Of course, to be fair, I'm never really on Twitter, so I haven't seen what happens there. The last time I went on Twitter was to catch the live tweets for the episode Put it Down.

If the fandom portrayed adults taking advantage of the characters, then yes, THAT would be problematic. But that is something neither the show nor the fancreators support.

I agree. Shit, man. Trey and Matt treat actual pedophiles brutally in their work. That fucking Jared boss fight in TFBW. I was dyin' over all the shade cast there. XD So I think if they had a problem with shippers we would know, lol.

(Right? How about some of that dialog? "You really pounded that guy, Tweek!")

Somebody better not tell them about the episode where Ike starts dating his kindergarten teacher...

Or Cripple Fight. Or Cartman Joins NAMBLA. Or Red Hot Catholic Love. Or...

Yeah, I think you get the idea. Trey and Matt are positively brutal toward pedophiles. You even get to beat up several pedophiles in Stick of Truth and The Fractured But Whole, too. They do a much better job calling out actual sick motherfuckers than the pathetic purity brigade in fandom, who can't seem to handle simple concepts such as nuance, or children/teens growing up.

Sexualizing them is weird because they are gross and unsexy third graders, not because it's a kids' show.
