Review/Analysis of Enterprise's "Babel One"

(Anonymous) 2018-03-11 05:46 am (UTC)(link)
The Enterprise has to play mediator between a group of Tellarites (argumentative at the best of times) and a group of Andorians, all while a sinister third party tries to arrange a war. I'm sure the characters are thrilled that this is starting to become the norm for them.

Need opinions

(Anonymous) 2018-03-10 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I bought a cloth doll for my niece. There were three types and I picked the one whose outfit I liked best (cute floral dress as opposed to bright barbie pink dress or red polka dot dress.)

Anyway I get to the counter and the customer service lady was like 'oh a darker skinned doll, what a good idea'. In a kind of a weird way.

I'm white and so is my niece btw. Painfully, you need sunglasses in the sun pasty ass white.

I didn't buy it because of the skin tone. Not to sound like one of those 'oh I don't even notice skin colour' people but I genuinely hadn't thought about skin tone of this doll. I'm pretty clothes orientated.

And now i'm worried that it's weird or seems like a political point or is it in itself racist for my white as white niece to have a doll of a different race to herself?? I'm so confused.

Tldr is it racist for a white child to have a doll of a different race?

Re: Need opinions

(Anonymous) 2018-03-10 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
...no?

And I'd find it hilarious if any white person who owns anime figures comes here to claim it is.

Rather I think having toys that represent different groups helps make those groups become familiar, and "normalized." Which should be good, or at least neutral in development of a tolerant world view. Which maybe makes me sound weird like the clerk, but I don't think of it as a political message.

But yeah don't think it's racist at all to treat a toy of a different ethnic group than oneself to be of equal consideration. I certainly had toys representing different groups growing up (I mean mostly white cause that is what was available, and probably cause I'm white too).

I think you're overthinking it.

If you were buying your niece a toy truck and someone went 'good on you for breaking gender norms' but it had nothing to do with that, would you suddenly not give it to her for fear of coming off political?

No it's not racist. I'm white and old and as a kid I had dolls of different skin tones.

a very similar incident happened to me many years ago, I was buying a doll for my niece (I'm white and so is she) and the doll was somewhat Latina-looking and the toy store guy thought she might have some sort of objection to the doll's appearance. I was all "oh, no, she wouldn't" and I was sort of shocked he would even ask that.

Re: Need opinions

(Anonymous) 2018-03-11 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
The lady was just being weird. Unless your niece was there with you and it's obvious you were buying the doll for her, then the customer service lady was making some big assumptions about what the kid you were buying the doll for looks like. It's also not something that should be remarked upon, really.

Re: Need opinions

(Anonymous) 2018-03-11 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
You're fine, OP. The cashier was the weird one. I collect dolls and I've had cashiers say odd things to me when I buy dolls that don't match my skin tone (I'm brown). The oddest was the one who said I really should be buying brown dolls instead of white ones . . . while I was buying a black doll. I still have no idea what prompted her to say that.

Re: Need opinions

(Anonymous) 2018-03-11 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
It's fine. You're normalising 'liking characters/dolls that don't look exactly like you' which is a pretty good thing, yeah?

Enjoy the pretty, and go with the deity or philosophical principle of your choice.

"Looking your age"

(Anonymous) 2018-03-10 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Looked up a few old friends from high school on Facebook this morning and was stunned. They all look like they've aged 20 years. Some even more than that. Admittedly it's been 10 years since I saw them, but still. If I claimed we went to high school together in the same year, no one would believe me.

I don't know if it's that they've become super mature-looking or if it's because I've remained super childish-looking. A bit of both? Some have had a child or two and that's def a huge factor. But all in all it's still a little crazy to think about. I feel like I should make an effort to look older to match my cohort and "look my age," but on the other hand I really don't want to, and there's a huge difference between a late 20s mom of two and a late 20s single never married, and which is the "appropriately mature" age to look?

For people who are older than that, does there come a point where age becomes so apparent, or lifestyles diverge so much, that it ceases to matter? When do you think that point is?

Tipping Etiquette Argument

(Anonymous) 2018-03-10 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
So, I saw a post on tumblr that said you should always tip 20% and add an extra 10% to a tip for every extra hour you keep a table at a restaurant. While I dislike the whole tipping system because I wish, y'know, restaurants would pay waiters a living wage in the US, like in some countries, I always tip 20-25% at restaurants because waiters need to live. I also live in a place that has a high cost of living, so I agree with the post for tipping 20%.

My issue was with the idea that I should be tipping an extra 10% for every extra hour at a restaurant...staying a bit over 2 hours at a restaurant isn't abnormal depending on food service time, amount of drinks you're getting, appetizers, entrees, desserts, etc. However, my friend disagreed with me and said I should always tip an extra 10% on top of my bill in addition to the standard 20% if I stay longer than usual (so I'd tip 30% for staying 2 hours at a restaurant).

I got kind of annoyed with my friend because I had never heard of this kind of etiquette before, and like...I can understand tipping more if you're /wasting/ time at a restaurant and not continuing to order food/drinks, but like...if you stay a bit longer and continue to buy food/drinks (alcohol is expensive!), then you're going to make the bill higher which = higher tip.

When I go to restaurants, my friends/family and I usually order a couple alcohol beverages each, so I pointed out to him that a waiter that served us would be getting a pretty decent tip at 20-25% from us, anyway, and I NEVER waste time a restaurant just sitting there and not ordering more stuff once I'm done. But no, he said that if I stay over 2 hours, then I should always be tipping 30% regardless if I'm continuing to order things....

I feel like I'm right here, and I think my friend is being ridiculous, because, again, I have literally never heard of this "etiquette" before. What do you guys think?
