(Anonymous) 2018-03-12 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)I remember hanging out in the FakeNews community back in the day, but yeah, back then people who liked Jon and Stephen together (myself included!) were just having a bit of fun with the concept. I don't remember it ever crossing over into active speculation about their real life sexuality or anything of that sort, or fans arguing with each other over the issue.
Sad to hear that kind of attitude has shown up in that fandom in recent times. I have yet to personally come across any of those sorts of comments you mention, but I'm not on a whole lot of social media platforms (I don't have Twitter or Tumblr accounts, for instance), so apparently I've just been lucky enough to miss that type of conversation. But now I know they're out there, I'll just try to stay away from that type of discussion as much as possible.

I think fandom in general has gotten way too zealous, witch hunt-y, and reaching towards extremes. Hopefully you can keep doing what you're doing, being a chill person who acknowledges that the celebrities you crush on have actual lives and aren't objects, and maybe fandom will shift back into being chill. Or at the very least you'll provide a safe haven for folks who aren't into internet craziness.
Not really an RPF fan, but I think you seem cool. :)

(Anonymous) 2018-03-13 12:17 am (UTC)(link)And yeah, this might be a fandom-wide trend. I get that fandom means being invested, caring too much, but everything gets dialed to 11. I often wonder if people genuinely feel/think how they post or if they're just exaggerating. It seems exhausting.

The fact that people are genuinely tinhatting for it is bad enough, but also, this is not something you should be hoping for or squeeing over! Even the J2 "these actors have been in sham marriages with prop children for a decade" tinhats have generally accepted that their story doesn't exactly make the subjects look sympathetic.

IMNSHO, the tinhatter belief that they're championing gay/bi men by accusing people of being queer entirely on the basis of superficial stereotypes and ship goggles, then harassing them until they come out of the closet is pure bullshit. It's primarily about having a smug rationalization that one's ship is better because it's more real. And unless you're a clear danger to the community, like Spacey's long-term harassment of young actors and production interns or conservatives building their closets out of anti-gay legislation, people should have control of their coming out process.

(though to be honest, I don't know if I think forcibly outing people is okay even if they are a 'clear danger' to the community; often sexuality is a less important factor in victim selection than opportunity. Straight predators attack boys if they have easier access to boys, not because they're secretly closeted. It's far more important to out guys like Spacey as predators than as gay or bi men).

Doesn't mean "everything a person does while in the closet is immune to any kind of judgment/criticism/side-eyeing."
