How often do your ships become canon?

(Anonymous) 2018-03-24 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
I'm curious how often the things you guys ship actually happen in the canon.

After just recently getting into yet another pairing that will never happen, I realized that I've never, not once, had one of my ships become canon. I guess it's not too surprising since most of my pairings are either same sex (and a lot of writers are still afraid of gayness), "problematic" in some way, or just flat out weird, but I'm curious if this applies to other people too.

Never. At least none of the pairings I root for BEFORE they are canon.

Almost never, since I ship mostly slash/femslash. When my ships are canon it's usually because I got into the fandom after learning that there was canon slash or femslash.

It's happened exactly three times and I know two of them incited massive shitstorms (not sure about the third since it was from a book).

Once

(outside of things I ship that were obviously set up as romantic from the start)

Most media is pretty frickin obvious about what the end game relationships are going to be, especially for main characters. I ship what I want. Who cares if it's never going to be canon?

Never, and I'm p glad about that. Most of my ships are unhealthy and I don't want that in my main canon, I'll keep it to fanfic.

Frequently because I'm gullible. The show sets up signs, be they breadcrumbs or flashing neon signs, and I'm like, "YEAH! I'll ship it!" (A specific example I can think of is Jake/Amy from Brooklyn Nine-Nine. The early episodes laid the groundwork and I bought into it.) Basically I do what the show tells me, lol.

On the plus side, your ship not being 'canon' means the writers can't fuck it up. :D (Forever bitter about Sylar/Elle on Heroes -- I shipped them so hard between seasons, and then the third season, I... I still don't know what happened there, man.)

I mostly just fall for it too, but sometimes you gotta bite the hand that feeds

Yeah I'm super-easy to be swayed with canon-ships tbh. Not all the time and not always to full OTP levels, but give me two characters who I like and think work together and dude, I'll be there.

I shipped Spike and Buffy after The Becoming Part 2 where he helps her take down Angelus. But then the canon...

This. That's the first in the line of several ships that became canon in a way that just made me wish they hadn't bothered.

Uh, some?

I'm very easy to sway with shipping canon couples so a lot of the time I'm shipping what the Thing wants me to like anyway, and if something has a canon LGBT couple then more likely than not I'll be all over it. Otherwise I'm shipping non-canon f/f and m/m that probably won't happen, sometimes m/f that's got no chance as well.

It doesn't really bother me though, I like a ship because I like it, canon won't stop me on that front.

Never, unless they were canon to begin with.

I don't really ship unless it's canon. Not out of elitism but because I don't consider it unless it's right in my face.

I once shipped a minor character with the heroine of a book - they did have one night together in canon but her true love was somebody else. Then in another book they got together and stayed together. But it's not like I wrote fic for it.

Other than that I haven't had any ships become canon that didn't have major hints or tension or something like that already going for them. And I'm not sure I can think of that many examples of that either.

Very rarely. Poop.

I've had a few I like become canon. Problem is that most of them didn't end happily, but still, at least they were a thing :p. Interestingly, the canon same-sex pairings I've shipped have had better luck than many of the canon m/f ones I've shipped.

In general, though, I'd say there's a decent balance between the ships that have been/are canon and the ones that aren't. And the ones that aren't canon still have close, deep platonic bonds, so I'm just as good with that :D.

I have a weird thing with canon shipping. American TV due to its long seasons and over reliance on unresolved "sexual tension" (translation: characters acting like idiots) almost always inspire a serious NOTP in me. I loved that Brooklyn Nine-Nine resolved that and started moving the relationship forward pretty quickly. Feature films are slightly more tolerable.

A chunk of my shipping usually involves in-game relationships, which are either there or not. I also do some heavy slash and crack, so not canon. (Except in the case of Tony Stark's Tight Pants, who really was the leading underappreciated character of Thor: Ragnarok.) A large chunk of my Star Trek: TOS watching right now involves spotting the innuendo and weird sexual tension, like Spock getting slapped around by Chapel and M'Benga.

Or Kirk being really appreciative of the back rub that Spock gives him.

Don't think I've seen that.

I got it slightly wrong. Kirk is just thinks Spock is giving him the back rub. It's from the being of 'Shore Leave' in the first season.
