I try not to be a snob about it, but when your tumblr post is hard to read because you don't know the difference between "you're" and "your" and you don't separate statements with punctuation don't come to me about the brilliant sarcastic expressionism of internet speak or what the fuck ever.

You actually take the bad spelling on Tumblr seriously? Like, you think people talk that way on Tumblr because they're too lazy and stupid to write correctly?

OMG.

It's a whole slang language, a dialect. You don't have to enjoy it, but make no mistake, the majority of people writing like that are well aware of how to write properly. I've known plenty of people on Tumblr who don't seem like great brains, until they're called upon to speak in a more formal situation on a subject they're an expert on, and suddenly you're hit in the face with the realization that this is, in fact, a mature adult who can expound eloquently on a serious topic. Maybe they also don't feel like they should have an obligation to write in Ye Olde Perfect King's English on their personal blogs.

In fact, you kind of have to learn to speak "Tumblr code" if you want anyone on Tumblr to pay attention to what you're saying.

Ahhhh. This reminds me of my early days in fandom when people would insist that not differentiating between your/you're or its/it's wasn't a mistake, it was their writing style and how very dare you for not getting that! It was giggleworthy then, and it's giggleworthy now to see such old material get a new airing. Thank you.

LOL, no.

Sometimes it is a style and sometimes it isn't.

like, the idea that there is never a style and usage that's distinctive to twitter/tumblr/etc is pretty objectively incorrect

that doesn't mean that every grammar mistake or perceived solecism is a stylistic choice but some of them definitely are

(Anonymous) 2018-03-25 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
To be fair, there are people on Tumblr who will brush you off and mock you if you talk like a "crusty" LJ user, aka not punctuating every sentence with literally and not using memes like a new SAT vocabulary word you learned that week in English class.

da

True, but fortunately the opinions of people like that generally aren't a matter of much importance.

When there are so many actual articles on websites with basic grammar mistakes these days, I'm not going to give anyone the benefit of the doubt on knowing how to spell, and I'm sure as hell not going to embrace the "dialect" either for the same reason.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-25 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
what's a grammar mistake

Yeah, this is what I meant. If I can't tell whether or not you're just using an anti-intellectual "style" which impedes comprehension or making a mistake, that is not a style worth using.

That is one of two possible explanations for you being unable to figure that out.

It's a secret language! Only the cool progressives can recognize it! If you understand all the ~ layers of that pipe post, you're really smart uwu, etc.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-25 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
nayrt but LOL, exactly. This whole "tumblr-speak that's deliberately written like a 10 year old with poor spelling and grammar and no punctuation is a special dialect and you HAVE to speak it in order to be taken seriously on tumblr" is... really funny. I'm not sure whether ayrt is trolling or serious but given their last response to you I'm leaning more toward "trolling" now.

If you want to get a message across, you just have express yourself to the best of your ability. You shouldn't have to adopt a whole new "code" to be taken seriously if you're sincerely trying to communicate. Why would you defend that kind of behavior?

(Anonymous) 2018-03-25 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow. That is some grade-A bullshit you're peddling right there. You absolutely have to tailor your language to your audience if you want to get a message across. "Believe in yourself and be sincere!" looks nice on a motivational poster, but effective communication is a little more complicated.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-25 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
DA

Do you honestly think it is reasonable to expect people to communicate almost entirely in emoji?

(Anonymous) 2018-03-25 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
You're endorsing adopting an entire "dialect" that impedes clear communication, so where does the argument for effectiveness even come in?

(Anonymous) 2018-03-25 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
It communicates more and is a more effective means among adeherants. Similar situation as technical speak.

(I'm on mobile and my only spellcheck is autocorrect which I have disabled because it's a pain in to use so don't give me crap about my spelling here.)

an entire "dialect" that impedes clear communication

The same could be said of any dialect! Using any dialect or code or argot or jargon or whatever is going to lead to impaired communication with people who don't understand the dialect/code.

But people do actually end up using dialects and codes all the time for all kinds of purposes in real life, despite that fact. And the use of dialects *doesn't* impair communication between people who *do* mutually understand the dialect. It may, in fact, make it easier for those people to communicate with each other.
