I don't think the impact of that scene was about the surprise. I knew going in and it didn't ruin anything for me. That scene was about the emotions, about Moana understanding and feeling compassion and her inner strength. It was about healing (for both of them).

Yeah, I didn't know on first watch (at least, not until very soon before Moana did), but the scene hasn't lost any impact on rewatching. The staging and the music and the lyrics are all so powerful.

i suppose i did not word my secret carefully enough.

what ruined it for me was that i thought the characters knew. it had nothing to do with me knowing
