I don't think the impact of that scene was about the surprise. I knew going in and it didn't ruin anything for me. That scene was about the emotions, about Moana understanding and feeling compassion and her inner strength. It was about healing (for both of them).

Yeah, I didn't know on first watch (at least, not until very soon before Moana did), but the scene hasn't lost any impact on rewatching. The staging and the music and the lyrics are all so powerful.

The story's not a mystery or a suspense thriller -- the impact doesn't hinge on the events coming as a surprise. They do hinge on being able to relate to the characters on screen. If you don't relate to the characters or have trouble empathizing with others, that might be where your confusion is coming from.

the ending kind of hinges on the *characters* being surprised.

there is a reason that "know who you are" plays when moana walks up to te fiti: moana is the only one who saw te ka for who she really was, that is why the ocean chose her.

Yes, the characters are surprised, not the audience. So if you don't relate to the characters, or you have trouble empathizing with them, then the ending isn't going to work for you if you already guessed the twist like OP did.. You're pretty hostile for someone who just reiterated what I said.
