The story's not a mystery or a suspense thriller -- the impact doesn't hinge on the events coming as a surprise. They do hinge on being able to relate to the characters on screen. If you don't relate to the characters or have trouble empathizing with others, that might be where your confusion is coming from.

the ending kind of hinges on the *characters* being surprised.

there is a reason that "know who you are" plays when moana walks up to te fiti: moana is the only one who saw te ka for who she really was, that is why the ocean chose her.

so get your smug ass comment outta here

Yes, the characters are surprised, not the audience. So if you don't relate to the characters, or you have trouble empathizing with them, then the ending isn't going to work for you if you already guessed the twist like OP did.. You're pretty hostile for someone who just reiterated what I said.

I think it's pretty hostile to accuse someone of being unable to empathize with others because they didn't enjoy a Disney movie.

A lot of people have trouble with putting themselves in someone else's shoes. It doesn't make them bad people, and acknowledging their existence isn't as offensive as you think it is.

Your comment sounded like you were making a statement about the person you were responding to. Which is a stretch in this context and sounded pretty arrogant.

Dude. "So if you don't relate to the characters, or you have trouble empathizing with them" doesn't mean "you can't relate to others". Them = the characters. It doesn't have to mean that you can't relate to anyone else at all, it's just about this situation.

Their reply to that comment makes it seem like they really did mean "can't relate to others."

+1. Plus the original comment was "If you don't relate to the characters or have trouble empathizing with others, that might be where your confusion is coming from."
