TBH, Mako wasn't even that big of a character in the first film. Fandom led me to believe she was the main character, but it was mostly about Stacker and Raleigh.

Mako was the emotional center of the first movie IMO, even if she wasn't the actual protagonist

Did Raleigh actually have a character arc in the first movie? I always felt like he was just there to facilitate Mako's arc and journey into becoming a pilot and to give us voice-over expositions about the setting.

Same here. Fandom also tried to tell me that there was no romance between her and the male character and that just... wasn't true? Sure, they didn't kiss in the end, but otherwise all the usual things were there.

Plus, while Mako is certainly awesome, Idk why fandom was all about this being a super feminist film when... there are no other women that weren't basically backround extras?

Right? A friend of mine gushed so much about her that I assumed she was the main character. I agree she's the emotional center of the movie, but that's not quite what I was expecting and it definitely wasn't this feminist example of representation, either.

Ya, I was a bit disappointed.

And while I have no horse in the game, being a White woman, it made me super-super sad for Asian-American women in contemporary America. If this depiction is the height of what one can expect -- that's really fucking dismal, and film-makers should be ashamed of themselves.
