Fandom was never a purely happy place where everyone got along, and there were always ship wars and to some degree moralizing. But still, I do miss the days when you could label a fic and the prevailing sentiment was that if someone read it anyway and didn't like it it was their problem.

Now we're back to stuff like people cheering each other on for making trollish comments on fic and I'm so tired of it.

I dunno, fic-sporking was popular on LJ, so while the comments didn’t usually end up on the fic itself or aimed directly at the author, there’s not so many communities set up to do nothing but mock fic people dislike or think is dumb.

That is true as far as it goes. There is a lot less mockery based on perceived quality of fic and in and of itself that's a good thing. I used to mock fic and now I regret it a lot. But there is more opposition based on morality.

AYRT—I think opposition based on (perceived) morality isn’t as bad as mockery based on perceived quality, so long as it’s kept to the modern version of a sporking community and posted with appropriate anti-tags, and no one tags the author in or attacks the author for writing a ship they think is wrong/horrible/whatever.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-09 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
I think you might be in the minority there. For many people, having their values and worth as a person attacked is more upsetting than being told they're bad at a hobby.

AYRT—oh no, I meant the morality of the fic/ship/canon/whatever, not the person writing it. Unless they’re posting puppy sandwich recipes and pictures of their new Nazi armband and saying all poor people should be left to starve, but then it’s not fic you’re saying is gross. There’s plenty of ships and shipper behavior that makes me want to grind my teeth, but saying “x ship is gross/creepy/sick” is not the same as attacking people who ship it. I have been told a couple of my ships were gross/weird/creepy/etc, and in some cases I agree, but not all.

“x ship is gross/creepy/sick” is not the same as attacking people who ship it

Most people have a hard time making this distinction, and I can't blame them. In practice, the implication of "this is gross and that makes you a gross person" is inescapable... and the antis often go beyond mere implications.

Yeah I think it's quite naive to think that antis don't mean "...and therefore everyone who ships X is gross/creepy/sick" when they criticize a ship.

At the end of the day anti behavior is just particularly nasty shipwar behavior. They don't want to have a discussion about morality or talk about why people ship what they ship. It's not even for fun or to vent about a ship they hate. They're just trying to find the most devastating, irrefutable method of discrediting rival shippers.

It goes way beyond mockery though. They absolutely DO attack the authors, hard. People are getting harassed and doxxed and suicide-baited and accused of being pedophiles and rape apologists, and that sense of "well, they deserve it because they suck" is WAY stronger in people who like to get angry self-righteous highs if you convince yourself someone who ships the wrong ships is a pedophile, as opposed to just a bad writer.

I don't think either is good, but I do think getting mocked for writing Mary Sue fic is probably not as damaging as having hundreds of people screaming at you to kill yourself because you wrote teenagers kissing.

I think I prefer sporking comms, honestly. At least that way, if I'm feeling sensitive about a work or in a bad headspace, it's super easy to avoid, and the mockery isn't showing up on my actual fic in the comments or in my personal blogs inbox.
