Log out of tumblr. Fixed! (At least try it for a while, until fandom feels fun again.)

(Anonymous) 2018-04-08 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Until they start getting people harassing them in the comments of their fics on AO3.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-08 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
At least you can delete shitty comments to AO3.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-08 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
If there's no rewarding way to engage with it, don't engage with it.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-08 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I replied to the wrong comment before here because I meant to reply to this one too, lol.

A big problem with Tumblr imo is the lack of moderation. There's no way for anyone to control what shows up in a tag like there was in LJ or DW communities. If someone posted something in an A/B community hating A/B, a mod could delete it, but with Tumblr that's not possible. Antis or haters or simply people that disagree with something brigade other groups all the time and each group are never quite able to define themselves or establish overall rules that everyone follows.

Except by socially pressuring the nonconformists to conform or get out, which sometimes ends up going overboard into bullying and harassment.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-08 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not really disagreeing with you about this, but I think that the deeper problem is that the problems that you're pointing out here are also the reasons why Tumblr is so popular and so successful - because there's no moderation and because the structure means that content goes wildly viral in uncontrollable ways.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-08 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT

I don't disagree with that either.

Things going wildly viral can happen even with user moderation, though. Reddit posts go viral all the time and most communities have strict rules for posting content. Especially the default ones which are their metaphorical public face.

One of the things that bugs me about tumblr is that people have no sense of personal space or boundaries. I may think that Theodore Beale is wrong about just about everything, but I'm not going to brigade his personal blog to say how wrong he is. And yet, on tumblr brigading people who disagree with you is to be expected. Your personal page is personal but any post is public depending on how it's tagged or reblogged.

As a wise philosopher once said, the haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate. Baby, shake it off.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-08 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
A 12 year old was recently harassed to the point of suicide by antis in one of the fandoms a friend of mine is in. All because of fanart of two adults hanging out together. One of the characters was underage in the early days of the canon but, again, is now an adult. I've been watching the drama from afar and just feel sorry for people who have the misfortune to be in fandoms with these sorts of maniacs. You either can't participate at all, or you risk yourself getting doxxed and harassed. Neither option is very good.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-08 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
First of all, that's terrible. Second of all, this is one of many reasons why 12 year olds shouldn't be hanging out in the same fandom places as older teens and adults. This is not a knock on 12 year olds, but on whoever is supposed to be taking care of them. You wouldn't leave a kid alone in a bar. Don't set them free in the cesspool of the internet and hope for the best.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-08 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
12 year-olds need outlets too. Obviously, as with all things in life, it doesn't always turn out well. But lots of people discovered their creative sides wading in the 'cesspool'.

Can you provide any concrete details? I'd like to push back against the tendency of tumblr to decide just about anything is ~problematic~ these days.

Use the Block function on Tumblr. Life is too short to let haters ruin your fun.

It really sucks about the writing, OP. I hope you find a way to rediscover your fun in fandom.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-09 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, do this. I've probably blocked about 75% of the fandom on Tumblr, but it makes my fandom experience much better.

Fandom was never a purely happy place where everyone got along, and there were always ship wars and to some degree moralizing. But still, I do miss the days when you could label a fic and the prevailing sentiment was that if someone read it anyway and didn't like it it was their problem.

Now we're back to stuff like people cheering each other on for making trollish comments on fic and I'm so tired of it.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-09 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
I dunno, fic-sporking was popular on LJ, so while the comments didn’t usually end up on the fic itself or aimed directly at the author, there’s not so many communities set up to do nothing but mock fic people dislike or think is dumb.

Echoing the BLOCK 'EM ALL sentiment.

The tumblr jerks were likely just using your fic as a way to bash an unpopular ship and gain 'SJW' brownie points so they can look "cool" in front of each other. The good news is they all came out to show their asses and have made it really easy for you to go down the chain and block them all. It's unfortunate that so many fandoms seem to attract this kind of intolerance and that people can't keep their stupid opinions to themselves when they don't like a ship. All you can do is block the titinfants and go back to doing whatever it is you want to do.

It sucks when you like the unpopular ship and your fics don't receive the kind of attention that the juggernaut ships get but there are definitely other people out there who like your ship and will be so happy when they finally come across your fic.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-09 10:23 am (UTC)(link)
Fuck the haters! Just keep writing what you want to write. Like any bullies, if you ignore them they will eventually realise they can't get to you and go away. Plus continuing to post stuff you like in the face of their hate has the added bonus of pissing them off XD

As others have said, block the bullies. And honestly, anyone who is immature enough to stop being your friend simply because they don't like a ship you do isn't worth it.

This is closer to my view of Tumblr than the "big city" view of secret #6.
